Ink & Salt LLC. (2015). The ASL App (Version 3.0) [Mobile application software]. Retrieved from https://apps.apple.com/us/app/the-asl-app/id921030207
Price: Free (In-App Purchases Offered)
Rubric Score: 16/22
Age and intended audience: 12+, For anyone looking to learn ASL
Review: Designed for the deaf and hearing-impaired community, The ASL App offers individuals a visual dictionary of sorts for free topics (including the ABCs, numbers, basics, and universal gestures), with the option of paying for more bundles to expand ASL vocabulary (including Dining & Signing, Celebrations, Mood Swings, LGBT & Pride Signs, and more). The app was created for users 12+ and presents itself as a more adult app. All users can feel comfortable using the app as a wide variety of different races and ethnicities are shown demonstrating the various inclusionary concepts such as celebrations, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. While anyone can benefit from the demonstrations of ASL vocabulary (and the bundles are consistently updated with the most recent update occurring in May of 2019), this app would best be utilized as a tool for those looking to learn ASL in order to communicate with the hearing-impaired community.
