Review: Kulture City is an organization that aims to make public places more accessible to individuals with Autism. In addition to their app, they provide locations (like the Cleveland Zoo) with sensory bags and calming stations to make visitors with Autism more comfortable. This app is a resource for the entire family to help them prepare their special family member for his or her visit to the location they choose. For example, the app had a list social story prepared for each of their locations. A social story is a commonly used tool that a user with Autism would be familiar with. It says things like “I know I’ll wait in line, I know I can find a sensory bag if I need it” and so forth. These stories were premade, they were not customizable. The app also acted as a portal into the Kulture City community where parents could read articles and so forth. This was definitely designed for dual media engagement, as it wasn’t really a game for kids to play, as much as it was a resource for the entire family. There were no in-app purchases, but the links to the online community included a link to their store where you could purchase items they promoted on the blog.
