Science

Kang Chiao International School (KCIS) offers a comprehensive and innovative science program that adopts AERO NGSS content standards and science practices, implemented within the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) framework. This integrated approach provides students in Grades 7 to 10 with a strong foundation in scientific knowledge, inquiry skills, and real-world application. The program also includes an Honors track for students in Grades 8 to 10 who demonstrate advanced proficiency, offering opportunities for deeper scientific exploration and more rigorous coursework.

In Senior High (Grades 11 and 12), KCIS offers multiple academic pathways, including the IB Diploma Programme, the AP Program (with AP Capstone), and a Regular Program aligned with US-based curriculum standards. These pathways cater to diverse academic interests and rigorously prepare students for higher education.

The KCIS Science Department aims to develop students' scientific skills and foster a lifelong interest in exploration and discovery. Each science course integrates hands-on laboratory activities that promote scientific inquiry, data analysis, and practical problem-solving. Students engage in conducting experiments, applying the scientific method, and collaborating on research projects, equipping them with the skills to become inquisitive and capable scientists.

In addition to core courses, the KCIS Science Program offers a range of experiential learning opportunities designed to deepen students’ scientific understanding and engagement:

Research in Synthetic Biology: Students in this course conduct advanced research in synthetic biology and represent KCIS in the internationally recognized iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) competition. They work on real-world problems using cutting-edge genetic engineering techniques, fostering both innovation and scientific literacy.
Introduction to Biotechnology: This foundational course introduces students to laboratory science through hands-on wet lab experiences. It equips them with essential technical skills and an early understanding of biotechnology applications in real-world contexts.

Science Expedition (in partnership with Operation Wallacea): This program enables students to participate in international conservation research expeditions. Tailored for students passionate about environmental science, biology, and geography, it provides hands-on experience in field research and conservation volunteering, emphasizing sustainability and ecological stewardship.

Through these dynamic offerings, KCIS ensures students develop critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills—preparing them for advanced studies in science and environmental fields and empowering them to make meaningful contributions to the world.

Students in middle and high school will also develop the eight key practices of science and engineering, as outlined in the NGSS Framework:

- Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering)
- Developing and using models
- Planning and carrying out investigations
- Analyzing and interpreting data
- Using mathematics and computational thinking
- Constructing explanations (for science) and designing solutions (for engineering)
- Engaging in argument from evidence
- Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

These practices equip students with the skills necessary to think and work like scientists and engineers, preparing them for deeper inquiry and problem-solving in both academic and real-world contexts.
