Becky Prophet

Becky Prophet has been directing plays and performances as well as creating events and festivals for more than 5 decades. Her aim is to bring experiences, performers and audiences--sometimes more closely related than seems obvious--together. Political, social justice, or edgy comedies and satires steeped in the seriousness of contemporary life and laced with laughter and are her preferred ways of working. This fall Becky, with little knowledge of contemporary technology and much hope jumped into devising a theatre piece on racial and social justice that was live streamed. Coming to terms with the digital world sometimes felt like trying to steer a speeding bobsled on a steep hilside in the dark. The experience and the deep collaboration with actors, designers, and tech crews opened a whole new world but meant that she discovered, all over again how much she loves in-person teaching and directing, with performances before live audiences. Becky can be reached at Alfred University in the Southern Tier of New York State at fprophet@alfred.edu, where the "f" stands for "faculty" nothing more, nothing less . . .. She'll experiment with almost anything as long as it uplifts humanity and promotes peace, justice, and equity.
