Band Timeline
Before School Begins:
Meet with 5th grade teachers
Get a list of special times
Line up a demonstration for all 5th grade students in school (may be done in conjunction with vocal music teacher).
Line up a schedule for screening times and re-screening times
Schedule the weekly full band time
Go to school secretary
Get class lists for all 5th grade sections
Get address labels for all students in 5th grade
Go to music and classroom teachers to obtain information about students
Director's personal information letter and the Beginning Band booklet are sent out to all 5th grade students and parents
Weeks One and Two:
Demonstrate band instruments for students
Explain band program
Explain how screening will work.
Hand out District Information packet
Begin to work with students in small groups to select instruments - both during the day and after school to accommodate parents who wish to be included in the process.
Complete a tentative schedule for lessons and give it to classroom teachers
Week Three:
Collect forms requesting the use of school instruments
Meet with band staff to distribute school instruments
Notify parents of the availability of school instruments for those requesting use of instrument for maintenance fee
Finalize lesson schedule
Week Four:
Lessons begin
There will be a minimum of two exposures per week -- one small group lesson for 35 minutes and one large group lesson for 35 minutes
Send detailed schedule to Level Curriculum Coordinator at IPC including:
Specific times of small group lessons
Types of instruments in each group
Number of students in each group
Which classroom(s) the students come from
May:
Instrumental instruction will continue until the last two weeks of school. Teachers who are responsible for elementary and middle school inventory repair and reports to the administrator are allowed to take up to three additional days (by ending their elementary lessons early) to prepare Activities during the final two weeks will include the following tasks;
Retrieval and assessment of school owned instruments
Return school owned instruments to the school from which they came
Repair bids obtained and submitted to performing arts supervisor
Informal recruitment of fourth grade students for next fall
