If you are interviewing someone, use a Samson Meteor microphone. Record video using a camera (not your laptop)
Make sure the person that is interviewed is speaking right into the microphone.
Test out the audio recording before getting too far into the recording. Make sure you can hear the person talking.
If you are outside, be aware of background noise and wind. If it's too loud, find a quieter place
Long segments of a person being interviewed are boring, especially if you don't change the camera angle.
Make sure the sound is perfect so you can play other video and images with their interview in the background.
If you are filming with the GoPro, do not record sound with it. You can record sound using your smart phone using the Zoom app while you are filming (unless you are on ESP because you are not allowed to bring your smartphone). On ESP trips, handheld recorders will be available. Record sound with these separately!
During the editing process, edit in the sound. Make sure to give a signal (like a clap) so you can match the sound with the video footage. Do not use the voice memo app on your phone to record because it will speed up the recording a bit. Click here for the Handy Recorder app.
Bringing headphones that have a microphone or purchasing a lapel microphone might be a good idea if you would like to get clear sound.
