Day 11 (Monday, June 16): Modica and Ragusa

Two other Sicilian architectural gems, Modica and Ragusa, provide our focus today. First, we are introduced to the oldest confectionery (1880) on Sicily, Bonajuto, where we’ll enjoy a private tour of the chocolate factory! Afterwards, in the quaint store, many varieties of chocolate following Aztec recipes brought from the New World may be purchased: these make for unique gifts for friends back home. Then, if time permits, we’ll visit the beautiful St. George’s Cathedral which overlooks Bonajuto and the lower city of Modica. 

A short drive away is another UNESCO city – Ragusa – delightfully situated by a gorge, which we can view from the Hyblaean Gardens. Lunch is enjoyed ‘al fresco’ at A Rusticana restaurant, and this is followed by a little freetime wandering the city center. Later in the afternoon we travel back to the hotel for the pool (and the beach for those who prefer it), and then dinner.
