Day 10 (Sunday, June 15): Mount Etna
This day is devoted to a visit to Mt. Etna. We begin with a visit to the magnificent Benanti Vineyards for an introduction to their superior wines, followed by a light lunch. This visit has been facilitated by Bill Kniep (JBS alum) of Pinnacle Wines, which is the distributor for Benanti in Missouri. The wines are distinctive because of Etna’s particular terroir and climate, and we will learn something of Benanti’s heritage through tastings (soft drinks for the JBS students!) and through the expert guidance of Francesco Pisasale. In the early we drive to the Funivia, from where we ascend to Etna’s summit by cable car and then on foot with a professional vulcanologist. Late In the afternoon we return to the hotel for a little rest prior to our dinner at a local pizzeria, Le Tre Farine, located in a former grain store.
