Home STEM Toolkit

When it comes to learning at home, we know it’s a challenge for our families! You may not be an expert teacher, but you can be a Learning Guide. Don’t be afraid of not knowing about science and math! You don’t have to know the answers! Learn along with your child and look ideas up to discover together. This is good research!

Getting started with STEM:

These STEM/STEAM activities were selected to be used by families at home, with common everyday supplies or those can be bought at the local grocery store or department/dollar store.

Get your child started, then let your child do the activity on their own or with a sibling. Check in once or twice to see how they’re doing, then have your child tell you about what they did and what they learned. The process of creating and problem-solving is much more important than the end result. Encourage many differnt tries and changes. We call this the iterative process or iterations.

Some of the activities may suggest pages be printed. You can ask your teachers for these, if possible. Also, be assured that you can use an electronic version on your phone or devices as guides. You can also create a version of these laid out or sketched on any paper, even recyceld junk mail. Feel free to substitute anything on hand that will help your child create a versioin of the project.

Be sure to take pictures and/or video during the creating and of the final creation to share with family, friends, classmates and your child's teachers!

Mosts of all, have fun and be creative!
