Introduction
My journey at Indiana University Indianapolis (IUI) began with a personal drive to help others, but my time as a Chancellor’s Honors Scholar has transformed that drive into a disciplined, evidence-based professional identity. To be an Honors Scholar is to engage in "active participation" in one’s own intellectual development, moving beyond the standard curriculum to ask how systemic change occurs. As I prepare for my graduation in the Spring of 2026 and transition toward an MSW, I look to two defining experiences that illustrate my growth: the creation of a clinical guidebook for Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the legislative advocacy project, ChildCare Connect.
Motivation Interviewing (MI) Guidebook
In the Spring of 2025, I undertook an Honors Contract for SWK-S 332: Generalist Social Work Practice II, under the guidance of my professor, Stephanie Rupert, who challenged me to bridge the gap between theory and practice. The result was my artifact, "Motivational Interviewing in Action: A Practical Guidebook for Social Work Practice."
Growth and Skills Development
Through this project, I moved from a surface-level understanding of MI to a deep, technical competency in the "OARS" (Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries) technique. I learned that social work is not just about "listening," as I once thought as a freshman, but about strategic listening that evokes a client's own motivation for change.
Developing the guidebook forced me to synthesize these complex theories into a "quick-access" format for practitioners, a skill in knowledge translation that is vital for any social work leader. It also allowed me, perhaps more importantly, to share my learning with others.
Alignment with Honors College Learning Goals
Active Participation in Intellectual Experiences:
My Honors Contract in SWK-S 332 is evidence that my work achieves the IUI Honors College goal of being an active participant in my intellectual experiences. Rather than simply consuming the course material on behavioral change, I took the initiative to synthesize complex clinical theories into a functional guidebook, demonstrating an ownership of my education that goes beyond the standard classroom requirements.
Strong Communication & Problem Solving:
Creating the "Motivational Interviewing in Action" guidebook aligns with the IUI Honors College goal of developing strong communication and problem-solving skills. This project required me to solve a specific professional problem: how to make dense, theoretical MI techniques accessible to busy practitioners. By translating academic jargon into clear, actionable "OARS" strategies, I demonstrated the high-level communication skills necessary for a career in social work leadership.
Policy Advocacy through ChildCare Connect
My second pillar of growth stems from a collaborative Honors project within the History and Analysis of Social Welfare Policy course. Alongside my peer Ellie Cook, and under the guidance of our professor, Stephanie Quiring at IU Indianapolis, I co-founded ChildCare Connect, a digital platform designed to "digest" and demystify complex Indiana state legislation regarding child welfare.
Growth and Skills Development
This experience shifted my focus from the micro-level (clinical practice) to the macro-level (policy and legislation). Analyzing bills like Senate Bill 169 and Senate Bill 171 required a high degree of "professional savvy." I had to learn how to read legislative language, identify the social implications of policy shifts, and then use digital design to make that information "publicly accessible" for families and practitioners. This project taught me that a social worker’s duty includes bridging the information gap between the statehouse and the community.
Alignment with Honors College Learning Goals
Participate in Engaged Learning Experiences:
The ChildCare Connect digital platform is evidence that my work achieves the IUI Honors College goal of participating in at least four engaged learning experiences, specifically experiential and applied learning. This was not a theoretical exercise. This was the creation of a live resource intended to assist Indiana residents in navigating child welfare legislation.
Develop a Connection to the Honors College and Community:
Collaborating with a fellow Honors Scholar to build ChildCare Connect aligns with the IUI Honors College goal of developing a connection to the Honors College and their Honors community. This project fostered a partnership rooted in shared academic values and a common mission to serve the vulnerable populations of Indiana through informed advocacy.
Connecting Growth to Future Career Goals
As a student who is "soon to be a graduate," these experiences have aligned to form a comprehensive professional framework. My upcoming MSW will focus on clinical depth and practice, while my secondary goal of a Master’s in Educational Leadership will draw directly from the "policy-to-practice" bridge I built with ChildCare Connect.
The Honors College has taught me that leadership is a form of service. Whether I am using MI to help a client find the motivation to change their life, or I am leading an educational institution to implement more equitable policies, I am using the tools I forged here. My ability to reflect on these "growth/skill developments" is evidence that I am prepared for the rigors of graduate study and the complexities of the social work field.
Conclusion: A Retrospective View
If Honors faculty or professionals in my field view this ePortfolio, they will see more than just a list of classes. They will see the evidence of a scholar who understands that social work is both an art (communication) and a science (policy and research). For my family and friends, I hope this reflection illustrates the "scope and depth" of my journey. I went from a student who simply "wanted to help" to a graduate who has the technical tools and the legislative knowledge to make a measurable impact in my field.
My Retrospective Reflection itself aligns with the IUI Honors College goal of reflecting on growth as a learner through classes and engaged experiences inside and outside the classroom. This document is the final artifact of my undergraduate career, proving that my work at IUI has achieved the standard of excellence expected of an IUI Honors Scholar.
