This is a space for you to document your ePortfolio Grant experience, from the initial proposal to your final report at the end of your semester integration.
Reflecting campus priorities to support equitable access to engaged learning for all IU Indianapolis students, the Institute for Engaged Learning (IEL) will focus the 2025-2026 academic year funding to support ePortfolio integration at the course level. The goal is to increase, improve, and sustain ePortfolios as part of the curricular structure assignments and activities in a course or series of courses. Given this priority, we seek new and veteran faculty dedicated to implementing ePortfolios in new ways or deepening/transforming their ePortfolio-engaged initiatives in credit-bearing experiences. For applications that meet these criteria, the IEL will offer support through additional funding streams, summer/faculty development session, communities of practice [CoP], and online resources.
My teaching philosophy is based on active learning where students experience challenge, support, and inclusion. I foster active learning by using a hands-on approach that makes practical application of theoretical concepts. Active learning takes place via in-class problem solving on the concepts for the week or chapter we are covering. In upper-level accounting courses, I routinely assign semester projects to students. These projects enhance the concepts from the course with a practical application of a real business or situation.
I believe students learn by doing, by making connections across disciplines, and by seeing how disparate parts fit together. I am committed to educating students holistically to develop a sense of purpose, competence, integrity, and community. I make culture and diversity a priority to help students see the value of multiple experiences and perspectives to be successful in business and in life. As a role model, I demonstrate to students what it means to be professional, to treat everyone with dignity and respect, and to make a valuable contribution while living a balanced life in the process. I like to start my classes by asking the students how they are doing and playing some music before class starts. This always generates some comments and get the students ready to participate in class.
At the graduate level, I work with students to foster design thinking and professional development. Case study and analysis allow MBA students to demonstrate course mastery, while making a meaningful contribution to the educational process.
At every level, I try to incorporate new and interesting teaching tools in the classroom. However, entertainment is not the goal, I always use assessment of learning outcomes to establish that the innovation in question is an enjoyable class experience, and that it demonstrates improvement in student learning. I then use student and colleague feedback to refine my approach to the classroom to ensure that I stay current, relevant, challenging, and engaging.
I want to create more engagement in my Internal Audit course and provide a tool that the students can use to document the case and project work they can share or use for a professional portfolio in the future. I also want to take some of the fear of accounting and math that some students have. I want to better prepare my students for their next step into there profession job careers.
I want the students to take a deeper dive into the mini cases and the term project. I am looking for them to do more than just answer a set number of questions. I want them to start and continue thinking abouts risks and controls. I am looking at the ePortfolio as a mechanism to document and store these cases and see a progression in their abilities and the quality of there work. I want to accomplish the learning outcome of students performing quantitative analysis and make business decisions. I also want to use the ePortfolio to satisfy the learning objective of students being able to prepare written and oral messages that effectively express ideas and facts to others. Using the ePortfolio, students will prepare and deliver effective oral and written persuasive arguments.
I expect to bring more excitement and enthusiasm into my Internal Auditing class. I want to see how each student's progress and improve as they walk through each of the five mini cases. I am also looking for more student interaction among themselves and with me. I also, want to provide them with a tool they can carry forward for their resumes and to highlight their skills.
I wish to gain the knowledge of how to put together my own ePortfolio and gain the knowledge to help my students learn and use this tool. Again, I am hoping to make the course more interesting and more interactive.

My role as Primary Investigator is to help guide the students and provide them with the help and templates they need to construct ePortfolios. I will also provide the cases and class project that I want them to document with the ePortfolio. I will also provide feedback with each case and project as we move through the 16-week semester. I am hoping for a process that will highlight the student's growth as we move from case to case.
Later, you can return to this area to comment on obstacles, opportunities, and outcomes--then link to your Mid Progress report and Final Report.
I was a bit challenged having to input from MyDrive or Google docs. Still learning how to operate an e-portfolio. I am glad I did this challenge and incorporated it into my Internal audit class. Moving forward, I would add a student eflection and some per review. I would also dedicate more class time to woek in groups to learn from each other and demonstrate best practices.
Why this is a good sample from my class--which part is especially strong? Link to/feature THAT page.

ACCESS YOUR STUDENTS' SURVEY RESPONSES: ePORTFOLIO SURVEY RESULTS ARE IN
As part of your contributions, you were asked to have students respond to pre/post surveys of ePortfolio use in your course. Students reported benefits from ePortfolio integrations. You can access cohort survey responses and your disaggregated student responses on your ePortfolio participant page.
With Your Help the ePortfolio Showcase Topped 1,400 Student Entries
The IU Indianapolis is officially the largest open-source repository of public-facing, student ePortfolios. In May, the Showcase topped 1,400 entries and is itself an example of engaged learning in action. Thank you for encouraging your students to participate and helping us reach this milestone.
CONTINUING YOUR WORK with ePORTFOLIOS:
Collect Surveys + Require Student ePortfolio Showcase Participation
You are welcome to continue ePortfolio surveys of your students. Our team will add these to your ePortfolio Participant page each semester that students identify you as the faculty member. NOTE: The old survey links are closing as we pilot new HICE surveys. Please stay tuned for the new and improved survey links!
Please continue to encourage students to share their work in the Engaged Learning & ePortfolio Showcase. The best way to get students to participate is through a point-bearing Canvas Assignments. The Showcase as a "public display of disciplinary competency" shows that your class meets this Essential Element of a High-Impact Practice. Students benefit from creating work that targets audiences beyond the classroom and can use their Showcase entry as a way to expand their digital footprint and to take control of their professional persona.
The ePortfolio Team is here to support your continued work with ePortfolios.
As you continue your work with ePortfolios, our IEL team is here to meet with you, to build ePortfolio tools to support your work, to help with design of research/analysis tools, to explore dissemination options, and to connect you with grant opportunities. Please email anytime to talk about your ePortfolio work or to share success stories.
We invite you to work with The Institute for Engaged Learning as you pursue other high-impact curricular practices. Please watch your email for future HIP opportunities and contact eportfol@iu.edu with any questions.
Best Regards,
Caitlin Lowenthal
