One of my ideas I like the most is the mural I made on paper, with the person touching the mirror in a dark hall.
The mural I’ve made is about either someone in a dream or someone exploring a nonsensical world. It also shows the contrast between the bright, vibrant, abstract parts and the dark, drab, ‘real’ parts of the mural.
This sparks my imagination because it raises questions about what exactly is happening in the mirror, background, and paintings. It also makes me wonder what would happen to this person afterwards.
The images in my mural that convey this are the mirror and the strange figure within it, the abstract paintings with an ominous hand and other shapes, and the bright background, with seemingly random objects floating around, complemented by the dark hallway and the normal boy.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on a wall by the street, where people would walk by.
The meaning/purpose would be to allow people to stare at it and feel like they’re also in the same place. The abstract sections would brighten up the streets, making it stand out, while the rest conveys the actual tone of the mural.
Another place I wish I could paint my mural is in a dead-end tunnel.
The meaning/purpose would be different here because it would cause the same illusion, while having the added effect of being in a darker place for the mood of the mural.
The mural I’ve made is about
Climbing the path alone, though a journey should be gone with others, sometimes it’s necessary for it to be gone alone at one point or another.
This sparks my imagination because
It makes me imagine tall mountains, which I usually go hiking with my dog and my mom or dad (or both) which brings back memories and reminds me of adventures.
The images in my mural that convey this are
Mountains, a sun peaking over the peak of the mountain. A man standing on one of the lower mountains, with the hollow silhouettes of 2 people next to him.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be
A big flight of stairs (if I could choose a specific location as well it would be this big set of stairs that I have to go up to get home, if I’m walking of course.)
The meaning/purpose would be
If there were multiple people walking together it might ruin it a TINY bit but it would be an encouraging piece to look at while walking up a big flight of stairs, almost telling you: you can do it! This fictional man is doing so you can too!
Another place I wish I could paint my mural is
A wall, where a mural would usually be on.
The meaning/purpose would be different here because
The meaning and purpose would stay the same, unless you moved it to a specific location.
The mural I’ve made is about no limits in anything you do and pushing yourself to go higher, to go further and challenge yourself. This sparks my imagination because there are many ways people can interpret the meaning of this painting. I like to think of the different ways people might look at this painting. It makes me imagine a harmonious community, because of all the colours balancing out. In the community, everyone pushes themselves to become better, and nothing can stop them. The images in my mural that convey this is the prominent “UP” text, the hot air balloon that is higher and larger than the others, the sky etc. It conveys the message that the sky has no limits, and we should always push ourselves to go higher and do better.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on staircases. The meaning/purpose would be to show as it could further deepen the meaning of the mural. As the meaning is to have no limits and push yourself, and every step you take is closer to the goal. The stairs also strengthen this message, because it symbolises growth. Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on a plain wall, higher up than the normal floor/level. The meaning/purpose would be different here because the viewer can see as the mural is clearly in the skies, putting it upwards can let the viewer think of the mural as to always go higher, make your standards/goals higher etc.
The mural I’ve made is about following your passions and shooting for the stars because it will make your life more enjoyable. This sparks my imagination because it reminds me of a colorful explosion, and I feel as though life is more colorful after following in your passions. It makes me imagine a world where nothing can stop you from following your passions, because of all the space the rocket has on my mural. There is a lot of blank space which represents that everyone is free to pursue their passions without boundaries. The rainbow is a sign of hope, the beauty after the storm. The images in my mural that convey this are the rocket, stars, and pointe shoes. The rocket and stars help convey the message of “shooting for the stars”. The pointe shoes represent a passion I have.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on a wall next to stairs. The meaning would mainly be about shooting for the stars and constantly improving. This is especially effective because stairs can be associated with journey, progress, and growth, not just in terms of the physical act, but also in emotional acts. This relates to the message of my mural because to follow your passions and constantly improve, you not only need to work hard physically, but also be mentally prepared for all of the challenges and never give up. Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on a bus. The purpose would be different here because the bus will help spread the message of my mural even more, by reaching more viewers and catching more people’s eyes. Since buses are a popular type of public transport in Hong Kong, I think that many people would be able to see my mural. My mural contains inspirational and motivational quotes, and I think that whoever sees it will be provided with inspiration and push us to work towards a specific goal or plan.
The mural I’ve made is about a girl swimming in the ocean, formally with masks trapping her, but when she went to the ocean, the masks were all off, and she is free again, swimming in the ocean with the animals as best friends. This sparks my imagination because I can link this to the current situation, now that there’s covid, we have to wear masks everywhere, and it’s like being trapped by it, but I love swimming so dearly that whenever I went swimming, I feel like I’m free, like the old times again, when there was no covid. The images in my mural that convey this are some masks, a girl swimming with a happy expression, some algae, starfish, fish, and octopus.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be in the school, on the walls of the C block swimming pool, so everyone going swimming can see it. The meaning/purpose would be to tell everyone how great swimming is, how it gives you the feeling of freedom, and wash off all fears and worries. It would encourage more people to swim, as swimming is a peculiar sport, different from soccer or basketball, because you get to do it in another setting : the water. Another place I wish I could paint my mural is the beach, this would be different because more people will see it and it is the actual ocean, where you can feel more free, bigger, and with the fish, octopus, and other marine life.
The mural I’ve made is about the scenery when the sun is setting, the colors of the sea, and the mountains towering above the mini trees. This sparks my imagination because I get a lot of freedom and options when drawing. I can choose to blend different vivid colors to create different styles for the ocean. I also get to choose the shades of the mountains to make it look 3D. Besides that, the mural sparks my imagination because we don’t usually see this type of scenery in Hong Kong since there are many buildings and skyscrapers when you look across the sea. There also tend to be fewer country parks where you can watch the sunset. The weather in the mural is very unusual because it is sunny, but also cloudy at the same time when the sun is setting. These are the certain aspects that spark my imagination. The images in my mural that convey this are the purple clouds in the sky, the reflection of the sun in the water, and the different colored mountains in the background. If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be a giant wall in the middle of a busy city because it will add more colors to plain buildings and also add nature aspects to it so that people driving past can enjoy the mural. The meaning of the mural would be beautiful nature scenery can help calm one's mind. Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on staircases where the painting would be painted on the sides of the staircases so that when you look at it from a certain angle, it would look like one piece. The meaning would be different here because people are walking on it, not looking at it. The meaning of the mural here would be everyone can have their perfect imaginary world, so dream on. This can help remind people who are walking by that they are special and they should continue to work hard in life.
The mural I’ve made is about a person with his head open, and balloons flying out of the head. There is also a butterfly beside the person. I also added a lot of colors to the person’s body, and the head looks like half of a sun.
This sparks my imagination because of all the colors in the mural, the upside-down smiling face, and the butterfly. How it sparks my imagination is that the colors mean my creativity for the mural, I thought that the smiling face would be really interesting so I made it upside down, and it makes me imagine some people smiling on the outside but their smile is “upside down” on the inside, which means they actually do not want to smile. For the butterfly, I chose simple colors of purple and blue, to present the simple beauty of a butterfly, it can show the feelings and thoughts the person has by it.
The images in my mural that convey this are the colorful balloons are the creativity in people’s brain, and it flies out of your head, the butterfly is an example that the person is imagining. The reason I included a lot of colors for the body is that I think everyone has their own color that could represent themselves.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on a window where it is facing outside towards the sun.
The meaning/purpose would be the creativity of a person should be lighted, and it shouldn’t be hidden in the dark, it should be shown outside, just like butterflies should be flying outdoors.
Another place I wish I could paint my mural is in an art classroom or studio.
The meaning/purpose would be different here because the main meaning of my mural is creativity, so if I paint it in an art room, then it might be able to spark someone’s imagination and give them inspiration.
The Mural I made is about reading books. The person who reads more books gets closer to succeed. This sparks my imagination because I like reading books. The images on my mural that convey this are the colourful background
The mural I've made is about an underwater city. There are buildings, structures, bridges, and forms of transportation. Above the sea, there is a boat, clouds, and a sunset-colored sky.
This sparks my imagination because of the variation of vibrant colors in the mural, the contrast between the top and bottom half of the mural, and the skyline of the underwater city. All of these make me think of the future, and what it might look like. The idea of an underwater city really makes me think.
I really like the tall skyscraper on the left of the drawing and the bridge I drew on the right because the color choice really fits the tone of my mural. I also liked the bubbles and the seaweed I drew, as it represents the ocean.
If I could paint this mural somewhere else, I would do it on a sign on a beach. This is because the beach is close to the ocean, which is what my mural is about, so the person viewing my mural can imagine and look at the ocean.
The mural I’ve made is about how we are all unique and special. People try to fit in with others, wanting to have a successful life by doing things famous people did before them to reach the same goal, but it’s not always the best route for some people to go. The people who use their talents and knowledge to create more efficient paths for themselves are the ones that succeed. This sparks my imagination because this is how our community works, the people who take risks and succeed will always be in the minority. The mural attempts to inspire the audience to take risks in life, it doesn’t have to be big, but it’s always worth trying. The images in my mural that convey this are the little black figures trying their best to climb up the stairs while one of them invented a new way of reaching the top, flying.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on the stairs. The meaning/purpose of painting my mural on the stairs is that people usually climb stairs xandra what does this mean just like how we all try to use the same route to reach the same goal. I think painting the mural on the stairs would let the audience more easily realize the message my mural wished to convey. Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on a wall near a school for children with disabilities. The meaning/purpose would be different here because children with disabilities are usually treated differently by others, and this can make them insecure about themselves. Painting this mural near the school can help inspire the children to do their very best despite their disabilities.
The mural I’ve made is about how all beauty will have to go through a process. I used different fonts throughout to enhance some letters and words and played around with different colors as well. For example, the words above, “Beauty always goes through”, are in a more mellow color scheme, purple and blue, but my final word, “process”, was written in big capitals and in red, yellow, as if it were on fire. This intensifies the final word as it pops and stands out against the rest of the words. This sparks my imagination because the words on the mural make me think about what they are trying to convey, what they mean, and the examples they would fit in with. They make me think about how the words and colors fit in different contexts, and about what the mural would mean to different people. The images in my mural that convey this are the words, the font, the color choice, and also the four little furballs on each corner. They look like little emblems of light, with the color very centered and deep near the corners, but gradually spreading out and growing lighter as they get nearer to the center. This is done to enhance the effect of the words as if shining them in light, and also to make the entire mural more colorful and bold.
If I could paint my mural anywhere, I wish for it to be painted on a wall near a hospital, particularly near a children’s hospital. This is because I wish for all the patients in pain or chronically ill to be reminded that they are undergoing a process and that it will get better. Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on a wall near a college. The purpose would be different here because instead of inspiring and reassuring sick patients, I want to urge struggling students in college to work harder and keep going.
INTENTION
The mural I’ve made is about the impacts of industrial factories on the the environment, specifically air and water pollution.
This sparks my imagination because it makes me think of all the ways I help contribute to stopping these global issues.
The images in my mural that convey how industrial factories affect the environment through dead fish, toxic waste bins, and grey smoke storms in the sky. I also made sure that the sky is black so that it makes people know how serious air pollution is.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on a wall that is near the ocean.
The meaning/purpose would be to tell people to stop littering and throwing the trash in the ocean.
Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on the wall that's near an industrial factory.
The meaning/purpose would be different here because it tells people to use less machines that produces smoke and it also tells them to stop cutting down trees.
The mural I’ve made is about people hiding their real identity behind beauty and fame. I got this idea from an old chinese folktale, she was a evil spirit from the dead, and she paints her skin to fake her real self, this story is from 《聊斋--画皮》. This sparks my imagination because I have seen a lot of news about kidnap cases when people get kidnapped because they believed in the kidnapper. There are a lot of people hiding their ugly minds behind a kind face, I feel like this message should be transferred to everyone. And people should be more cautious of the people around them and look out for people that might hurt them. The images in my mural that convey this are a face behind a breaking glass. So the glass was the person's “face” and she faked all of the beauty to attract people, then she breaks her glass face and shows her real self.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on a wall beside a playground, because the places with the most kidnappers are usually places with kids. So I think if I put this mural beside a playground, the kids or helper or parents will be more cautious in these cases. The meaning/purpose would be being cautious of kidnap cases, protecting your child, protecting yourself.
Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on the tram, so there are more people that can see this, because the tram goes all around the city. The meaning/purpose would be different here because this will be a message that tells citizens to be cautious of the people beside them, and protect yourself from getting scammed by others.
The mural I’ve made is about
The constant desire for money among humanity, to the point where success is defined by monetary value one makes, compared to the happiness one has. You can be a millionaire that is constantly depressed with the weight of mountains on his/her shoulder, or a regular person, with average income, but satisfied with his life and the little things he has done to help society. (This idea is very cliché, I’m not proud of that)
This sparks my imagination because
I used a lot of more realist ways to portray my message, like a fever dream one has stumbled upon, people’s heads turned into a single coin supported by the wire-like spine that defines who they are, how successful they are, and if they fulfilled their singular purpose within their life: make money. I really enjoy how the money (bills) bends and floats in different directions, so bizzare, perplexing and mesmerizing. I also enjoy how many things there are to process in the drawing and how many ways one can interpret my surrealist-like, fever-dream like mural, so many events happening within, that you have to take a good look to understand it.
The images in my mural that convey this are
The multiple reaching hands of people with a wire like body supporting a single coin, reaching for a coin, and within the coin, is another person with a wire like body, reaching for coins and coins, endlessly until the day where a wire no longer suffices to support the coin their heads are made of. There is a mask-like figure, with a dollar sign in their mouths, eyes, nose and hand, this shows how money is dominating the senses of people.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be
In a MTR, where most people go to work, for convenient, cheap transportation.
The meaning/purpose would be
I hope business men can make money without becoming a slave to it. I think this will spark a wide range of responses and I am willing to see the views of other people.
Another place I wish I could paint my mural is
Within the edifice of major companies.
The meaning/purpose would be different here because
The companies wish to tell the employees working there that the company does not wish the employees succumb to money in their work, and work without the weight of racing against monetary value, but to work to improve society and have a mindset of helping others instead of grabbing money solely for yourself.
The mural I’ve made is about a basketball court, which is indoors. This sparks my imagination because it’s someplace I go to almost every week to compete/train and is where I do most of my sports. The images in my mural that convey this are a basketball court, stands, a security room, and a point counter. If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be a wall in a busy street, because it would allow people to imagine themselves in a place like a basketball court. The meaning/purpose would be to try and exercise more, as the recent virus outbreak has stopped many from leaving their homes regularly to go and exercise. People might say that a treadmill and an at home workout can give you the same benefits, but going outside to a real place gives off a different experience than at home. Another place I wish I could paint my mural is the ISF Academy, as it's somewhere I arrive at everyday, and seeing my mural in someplace that is very close to me lifts my mood up. The meaning/purpose would be different here because there are many basketball courts in the academy, and what I want to convey if the mural was painted here is to stop using your digital devices and exercise. This can benefit students in their health and also eyesight, as many students in the academy are borderline addicted to their devices.
The mural I’ve made is about freedom and equality for all people.
This sparks my imagination because for this idea, there are lots of things that can be used to symbolize and convey the message.
The images in my mural that convey this are
Birds often represent freedom. Birds are often associated with freedom since they can walk on land and swim in water just like humans, but they also have the ability to fly. I incorporated this into my art to represent freedom for all people by having a bird rest on a woman of color’s finger. The woman of color also has an LGBT+ flag painted across her face. This represents freedom for all people.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on a brick wall.
The meaning/purpose would be that a brick wall is a metaphor for a difficult obstacle or obstruction in various contexts. So, if my mural were on a brick wall, it would symbolize that freedom for all would be challenging to overcome, but not impossible.
Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on a staircase.
The meaning/purpose would be different here because staircases can symbolize a journey; a staircase can be a passageway that connects any two things: places, thoughts, or states of being; ascending the steps indicates a happy journey. So, if my mural were on a staircase, it would symbolize a journey towards freedom.
The mural I’ve made is about the impacts of global warming on animals and their habitats. This sparks my imagination because it makes me think about how my art can raise awareness about global issues, alert the population to urgent matters, and help mobilize people to fight for this cause. The images in my mural convey how air conditioning melts ice caps and leaves polar bears homeless. Instead of cold air coming out of the air conditioning, I made a fire come out of it to symbolize its direct impact on animals. I also made sure to make the polar bear look sad to make the viewer sympathize with it.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be in an indoor area near an air conditioning. The meaning/purpose would be to make people more conscious of their actions and make them see the sad results of it. I would hope that it would encourage people to change their habits and practices. Another place I wish I could paint my mural is in an outdoor area, maybe on the window of a tram. The meaning/purpose would be different here because instead of trying to make them stop using the air conditioner since trams already don’t have ACs, it would make them want to help animals. Maybe even try and start to fight for their rights.
The mural I’ve made is about the Hongkong community. The trees and buildings. This sparks my imagination because I am curious about HK neighborhoods. The images in my mural that convey this are the Buildings and trees. The way this mural expresses that is though the details of the mural as it shows the intention of the mural.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on the wall because everyone can see it. The meaning of the wall mural would be to inspire others to do the same as me. Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on the stairs of my house. The meaning of the mural on stairs would be different here because as I would be reminded about it.
The mural I’ve made is about marine animals and them happily swimming around the coral reef. Creating this mural sparks my imagination, I get to use my imagination to create the different shapes and colors of coral reefs and the fishes that use the coral reefs as their home to avoid predators. Also, when I look at my mural, it makes me think about all of the marine animals that live in the sunlight zone living happily in their protected seas. I imagine that they are living in isn’t polluted by the cargo ships, no fish boats and hooks harm them, and they live in their original environment joyfully. The images in my mural that convey this are the different shapes and the bright colors of the coral reefs that show that this environment is healthy. The high diversity of reef fishes and other animals is also a sign that this is a sustainable environment.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on the walls of an environmental organisation.
A mural painted there makes the viewer much clearer for others to understand that the marine animals were living in an environment that was perfect for them without others, it increases their environmental awareness.
Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on a wall right next to the fishing port. The meaning/purpose would be different here because it reminds the fishermen that when they go fishing, try to reduce the amount of environmental impact as much as possible.
The mural I’ve made is about: music and creation and also imagination and dream
This sparks my imagination because I was listening to music when I was drawing and saw some like buttom on youtube
The images in my mural that convey this are cool and colorful
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be I will paint it on a stairs
The meaning/purpose would be imagination and creativity
Another place I wish I could paint my mural ison trams
The meaning/purpose would be different here because it would transportation kind of drawing
The mural I’ve made is about nature, psychic, future and technology.
This sparks my imagination because this is the type of art I would like to enjoy drawing and looking at.
The images in my mural that convey this are buildings and nature.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on the wall of my room.
The meaning/purpose would be that the future would not have plants anymore.
Another place I wish I could paint my mural is a wall on the streets.
The meaning/purpose would be different here because more people would be able to see it.
The mural I’ve made is about the environmental impact of a factory. I made a factory that is producing a lot of smog and smoke as well as other harmful pollutants, and I also showed it getting blown open at the side by a lightning bolt. There are also rivers beside the factory which have green water, which is presumably a result of the factory polluting it.
This sparks my imagination because climate change is a huge problem, and I wanted to make a mural to address it. It also makes me think, how can I reduce my part in climate change? How can I help in keeping the Earth safe from pollution?
The images in my mural that convey this are the green rivers, the massive dust cloud on top of the factory, the coal being burnt by a fire beside the factory, the workers inside the factory and the conveyor line for refining materials.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be a wall by the street.
The meaning/purpose would be to raise awareness about climate change, and because the mural would be in a public space, lots of people would be able to see it.
Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on a bus.
The meaning/purpose would be different here because the bus is a moving object, and it will influence a lot more people. Also, there are not as many restrictions for the place where the mural will be, because the bus can go anywhere, but you can’t paint a mural anywhere.
The mural I’ve made is about how human destroys and harm the environment and how they take consequences by the devil which represents global warming, natural disasters and extreme weather. Though people still live in a bubble that represents how people that doesn’t care about the destruction of the environment.
This sparks my imagination because it shows how people used different ways to harm the environment and how people take the consequences from their own actions.
The images in my mural that convey this are the white devil which represents the disasters caused by human. The toxic water, factories and chopped tree which represents how human-caused the pollution and harm to the environment. The city covered with a bubble represents the people who doesn't care and think that the pollution is none of their matter.
If I could paint it anywhere, one place I wish I could paint my mural would be on the walls. The purpose would be because people walking by can see the mural which can help remind them about their actions to the environment.
Another place I wish I could paint my mural is on a tram. The purpose would be different here because painting it on the tram can remind people more efficiently since it’s moving around and can also persuade people to use a more environmental friendly transportation.
