Dear K–2 Team and Interventionists,
As part of our continued focus on strong foundational literacy instruction, we’ll be conducting UFLI walkthroughs again this fall—just as we did last year. These walkthroughs are meant to support our systems, not evaluate individual performance. Our goal is to ensure consistency and alignment across classrooms to best support all students.
Focus of This Round:
We’ll be observing the first half of Part 1 of the UFLI lesson, which includes:
Phonemic Awareness
Visual Drill
Auditory Drill
Blending Drill
Walkthrough Timing:
Walkthroughs will occur during the first 15 minutes of your UFLI Part 1 lesson on Mondays or Wednesdays.
Walkthrough Window:
September 15–26, 2025
Action Step:
Please sign up for a slot with Geraldene as soon as possible. Early sign-ups will have access to the most flexible time options.
Walkthrough Form:
We’ll use this form to guide our observations during the visit. I’ve attached a PDF copy so you can see exactly what we’ll be looking for and how we’re tracking it.
Optional Resource:
For short example videos of each lesson component, this playlist may be helpful:
Want Individual Feedback?
While the walkthroughs are system-focused, if you would like individual feedback or a follow-up conversation, I’d be happy to connect. Please feel free to reach out—I’m learning alongside you and always open to growing in this work together.
Thank you for your commitment to strong, consistent instruction across our building. I’m looking forward to being in your classrooms and continuing this important work as a team.
Sean
You will most likely see Clayton and I carrying tablets. We'll do our best to follow along with the planned lesson. We may also be completing the Walkthrough Form, a copy of which is above this image.
As we continue our journey with the Wit and Wisdom curriculum, I'm excited to share that starting January 6th through February 14th, Clayton and I will be conducting another round of classroom walkthroughs. This phase of our visits will be particularly focused on TA1—how well module and lesson-level questions and learning goals are communicated and used to set a purpose for learning and drive inquiry.
Our goal this year is to deeply understand and support the implementation of these fundamental aspects of our new curriculum. Observing TA1 in action is crucial as it lays the groundwork for effective inquiry and learning in our classrooms. We look forward to seeing all the innovative ways you're integrating these strategies and learning together how we can continuously improve our practices.
Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. See you soon in your classrooms!

Dear K-2 Team,
Please schedule a time for me to observe your Orton Gillingham lessons, specifically focusing on the three-part drill. I will be sharing more details, including the rubric I'll be using, with you all after our BLLT meeting on September 19th. To ensure we get this on our calendars, I’ll be observing 2nd grade the week of September 30th, 1st grade the week of October 7th, and Kindergarten the week of October 14th. Please coordinate with Geraldene to set up a time during your designated week. More information below.
Thank you,
Sean

Dear K-2 Team,
For the upcoming round of OG walkthroughs, we will be focusing on Application, Word, and Sentence Dictation during your literacy blocks. To effectively plan my walkthroughs, I initially considered providing a uniform template for everyone to detail their weekly literacy schedules. However, recognizing the diversity in our organizational tools and the need for flexibility across 20+ classrooms, I decided against a one-size-fits-all template.
Instead, I ask each of you to submit a literacy schedule that best represents your unique approach. Please ensure it includes a detailed breakdown of the literacy block for each day of a typical week (Monday through Friday), particularly specifying when you implement Orton Gillingham, Wit and Wisdom, or any other related components. It's crucial that these times are specific to each day rather than described as a single, overall block.
Please provide your completed schedule by Wednesday, January 8th. Walkthroughs will commence the week of January 13th and are expected to extend over the month. Based on the schedules you provide, I will determine the best times for our walkthroughs—there is no need for you to schedule specific times.
If you have any questions or need clarification, do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your ongoing dedication to our students’ success.
Together at West, We Shine,
Sean
