ISB adopts a whole school, holistic approach to Student Support Services. Student Support Services aims to ensure that all students have equitable access to the curriculum and comprises Health, Counseling, Learning Support and English as an Additional Language.
The school has a full-time, fully accredited school physician. The duties of the school physician include providing immediate diagnosis of and care for students who fall ill or are injured at school, recording the diagnoses and treatments in written reports, and for more serious cases, contacting the relevant specialists. Each student has a health card on file in the school’s health office. It is the responsibility of parents to keep the school’s physician up-to-date about any medical issues. If a student needs medication, parents must leave the prescribed medication and accompanying dosage schedule for its administration during school hours in the health office. All accidents and communicable illnesses must be reported to the physician. Upon enrolment, parents are asked to complete mandatory immunization records.
The school physician communicates regularly with the entire school community about health issues, through letters sent on a needs basis and via the school’s website. Students also have regular annual screenings for hearing, scoliosis, and vision, as well as head lice (as needed). The school physician also works closely with healthcare professionals throughout Belgrade. In conjunction with the Administration, the school physician also makes recommendations concerning injury prevention in and around the facilities.
Staff members are given basic first aid and CPR training every two years.
ISB aims to be a fully inclusive school, giving all students equitable access to the curriculum, within the resources available to us.
ISB is able to provide up to 150 minutes per week of additional support in either EAL or Learning Support. If in the opinion of the school, a student needs more support than this, an offer of enrolment may be dependent on additional EAL or LS support being made available at an additional cost. The school will work with parents to personalize the level and type of support to give the student the best access to the curriculum.
The Primary School’s Learning Support team assists teachers with students facing challenges with the curriculum, as well as those requiring extra interventions. Students may receive assistance within the classroom context or specific support outside the classroom environment. In cases where there appear to be learning impediments, with no indicated learning support provision, parents may be requested to pursue professional diagnosis.
The Secondary School’s Learning Support Coordinator assists teachers with students facing challenges with the curriculum, as well as those requiring extra interventions. The Learning Support Coordinator may work with the student in the classroom context or support the student during designated learning support times. In cases where there appear to be learning impediments, with no indicated learning support provision, parents may be requested to pursue professional diagnosis.
The main emphasis of ISB’s learning support practices is to ensure that the appropriate support mechanisms and strategies are in place to allow all students access to the curricula. Unidentified or non-declared learning concerns often see a student struggle unnecessarily and lose confidence in their ability to cope with the academic challenges. Depending on the nature of the diagnosis, a student may be permitted extra time to complete timed assessments, tests and exams. These accommodations can only be provided on the basis of an educational psychologist’s report.
Specialized support in the areas of speech language therapy, occupational therapy and academic tutoring might be found in the Belgrade area, but must be paid for privately. In an extraordinary situation a student may require further support, such as a one-on-one Instructional Aide. The school can help to source the necessary personnel (if available) and fees for such support will be borne by individual families.
ISB adopts a whole school approach to Student Support Services, in which Counseling plays an integral part. The front line for all student well-being is the class teachers in Primary and the homeroom teachers in Secondary. The Counselors provide expert support to these teachers and directly to students as needed.
ISB Counselors provide a variety of services to support student well-being, such as:
Personal, social and emotional concerns.
Assist students and teachers with designing personalized programmes for students
Conflict resolution, bullying,
Transition support and self-esteem
Parents will be fully informed of interventions being carried out with students by the counselor.
Designing age appropriate curriculum for areas such as body image, peer influences,, healthy eating, relationships, drug and alcohol abuse etc.
Support for standardised testing, transcripts and the university application process.
ISB is a college-preparatory school with an emphasis on academic excellence through the IB Diploma Programme; therefore, the university counseling trajectory begins for our students in grade nine and follows a strategic continuum gaining depth and scope through grades ten and eleven. The program culminates in the university application process during semester one of grade 12, whereby matriculation to a tertiary institution is the goal and expectation for each ISB student.
ISB utilizes many university platforms such as BridgeU, UCAS, College Board, Study in Canada, Study in Holland and others. Over their high school years, students develop portfolios which include: personal reflection activities, aptitude battery results, CV, university research projects, personal statement and letters of recommendation. Additionally, the university counselor facilitates workshops and sessions for parents, as well as independent appointments with students and parents providing pertinent information and instruction around the university application process.
At ISB we encourage our school community to participate in a personal wellness program. Self-care is a critical piece to wellness in which we participate by making healthy lifestyle choices which contribute to mental and physical health and overall well-being. On this site you will find resources to assist you in creating and maintaining wellness, positive and healthy living.
