Communications

School Communication - Primary School

Effective communication is essential to a school’s functioning. ISB endeavors to keep parents abreast of events through its Dragon Dispatch (our weekly e-newsletter), PTSA and School Board meetings and the Moze system. The school’s website is a comprehensive resource for all parents seeking further information about ISB.

Every grade level in the Primary School uses the online platform SeeSaw as their communication tool and as a way to document student learning. Parents have access to their child’s class page. Log in information will be shared by the class teacher.

At the start of each academic year, ISB hosts an Open House day. Parents are given an opportunity to meet their child’s teachers and receive a brief overview of learning expectations and key instructional practices. Information about the time, date and location will be sent home at the beginning of the school year.

Regular parent information sessions facilitated by the PYP curriculum coordinator and the Principal occur with topics being decided upon according to parent feedback and school needs. These are well attended and provide a great opportunity for increasing home and school communication.

To sustain effective communication parents are encouraged to keep the school informed of any changes to personal details and circumstances.

Home and School Communication

Open and timely communication is vital and therefore, our teachers are happy to meet with parents at any time during the year. If you would like to speak with a teacher, please email them directly to arrange a suitable time.

As well as this, we have several other avenues of communication:

Protocol for Inquiries and Concerns

Whenever a question, issue or problem arises it is best to go to the person directly involved whenever possible.

Teachers

If parents have a question or concern about their child’s experience in a particular class, they are encouraged to contact the subject teacher directly.

Curriculum Questions

If parents have a question or concern about issues related to curriculum, assessment or general learning, you can contact Ms Chanda Pinsent, the PYP curriculum coordinator directly on cpinsent@isb.rs

Counselor

Parents may contact the Primary School counselor if they feel that their child would benefit from greater social-emotional support. Students receive social-emotional mentoring and learning in their classes and questions about the homeroom program can be discussed with the counselor, Ms. Sara Oliveira on soliveira@isb.rs.

Class Teacher

If you are unsure of who to contact, your child’s regular class teacher can guide you.

Principal

If more information is required or if a situation is not resolved with a teacher, coordinator or counselor, parents are encouraged to contact the Principal directly to arrange an appointment.

For concerns that go beyond these outlined measures, please refer to the Board of Trustees Policy Manual Section 601.3 and 601.4.

Email

Email is the easiest and fastest way to communicate. Staff will respond within 24 hours of receiving an email inquiry. However, there may be instances where this is not possible. In instances of importance, parents are encouraged to phone the Primary School receptionist who will contact the teacher.

The email address for each teacher is the initial of their first name and the family name. For example, Mr John Smith, would be jsmith@isb.rs. Students from Grade 3 and older have an email account which is monitored by the teacher in order to teach online safety, email etiquette and digital citizenship.

Use of Student Images

During the school year, students may be photographed or filmed while participating in school activities. These images may be used in a variety of school communications, including but not limited to the school newsletter and website, as per parents’ consents. As a matter of practice, ISB does not identify students by name when their image is used in either print or video communications. If parents would prefer not to have their child’s image used in any school publications, they are required to submit their preference by selecting appropriate options on the forms available through the Parent Portal on the school website.

School Communication - Secondary School

Effective communication is essential to a school’s functioning. ISB endeavors to keep parents abreast of events through its Dragon Dispatch (our weekly e-newsletter), classroom bulletins, PTSA and School Board meetings, and Moze system (Parent and Student Portals for the online gradebook, curriculum documents, and assessment calendars). The school’s website is a comprehensive resource for all parents seeking further information about ISB.

Information evenings are held on a regular and timely basis to ensure that parents are fully aware of all aspects of the Secondary School’s learning programs. These will be advertised in the Principal’s section of the Dragon Dispatch as well as via direct email from the Principal’s Personal Assistant.

At the start of each academic year, ISB hosts an Open House afternoon/ evening.  Parents also have an opportunity to meet their child’s Homeroom teachers where they receive a brief overview of learning expectations and key instructional practices.

Information evenings that focus on the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP) are held outside of the Open House to permit greater focus and chance dialogue between the Program Coordinator and parents.

On a weekly basis, there will be coffee morning dialogue sessions with parents to discuss school wide programs and initiatives. These will be advertised in the Dragon Dispatch.

To sustain effective communication parents are encouraged to keep the school informed of any changes to personal details and circumstances.

Protocols for Inquiries and Concerns

Whenever a question, issue or problem arises, the solution is first to be sought at its source and presume positive intentions. In any situation of interest or concern it is best to go to the person directly involved in order to ensure that you:

Subject Teachers

If parents have a question or concern about their child’s experience in a particular class, then they may contact the subject teacher directly.  Listed below are some issues that parents might address with subject teachers directly:

Heads of Department

If parents have a particular question or concern about an issue related to curriculum and/ or programming, you can contact the relevant Head of Department for a subject area.  The following are examples of issues that might be addressed directly with the Head of Department:

Program Coordinator

Homeroom Teacher

The homeroom teacher can be contacted if there are questions about the social-emotional-learning program that takes place during homeroom lessons.

Administration (Principal)

If more information is required or if a situation is not resolved with a teacher, head of department, coordinator or counselor, parents are then encouraged to contact the Principal directly.

For concerns that go beyond these outlined measures, please refer to the Board of Trustees Policy Manual Section 601.3 and 601.4.

The email address for each teacher is the initial of their first name and their surname. For example, Mr. John Smith, would be jsmith@isb.rs. All students have an email account to help facilitate communication with staff.

To ensure that all parents are able to appreciate the learning that is taking place within each class, each teacher has their own Moodlic page that can be accessed from the ISB website. Teachers indicate which online learning tool they use to conduct learning activities, assessment and homework tasks as well as remedial and extension work. Often, these tools are through G Suite applications (Google Classroom, Google Sites etc..).  Parents are given access to each teacher’s Moodlic page at the start of the academic year during the Secondary School’s Open House evening.
