There is no uniform or standard dress to which all students must conform. All students should be clean, neat and appropriately dressed for learning. Dirty, torn, or offensive clothing or those with inappropriate words or pictures are not suitable for school use. Shorts and skirts should be longer than mid-thigh length. We should not see bare midriffs or bare chests. We recommend that students wear hats or caps and sunscreen while exposed to the sun. Hats and caps are not to be worn in the classrooms during regular school days.
Students are expected to follow dress regulations for school-sponsored activities off campus. Students are permitted to wear the national dress of their native country.
Exceptions may be made in the case of appropriate team uniforms, special school events, and other specific Administration-designated activities. Teachers will refer students to the Principal if they feel there is a violation of the dress code.
ISB has a child-centered physical education program with an emphasis on cooperation, fitness and motor skill development through movement experiences.
All students are required to wear “athletic” type gym shoes and socks and comfortable clothes to PE. Shoes should cover the heel and toe and have non-skid soles. It is important that the shoes fit your child’s feet. Shoes that slip off during running and kicking activities do not provide sufficient support and are dangerous. Sandals or ‘flip-flops’ are not allowed during PE.
All students are required to keep an extra pair of gym shoes at school so they are always prepared for PE.
At ISB we believe that playing outside is an essential part of our students’ day. For this reason, students play outside in all weather and enjoy two break times each day. Please dress your children for Belgrade’s weather. A waterproof jacket is needed for periods of light rain. Warm coats, hats, boots, and gloves for winter, and hats and sunscreen for warmer months will help ensure that your child is ready for outdoor play, regardless of the weather.
Please make sure all clothing is named.
As members of a broad and diverse international community, everyone should be dressed in a way that reflects a commitment to learning, prepares them for the future and is sensitive to the mores of other cultures. Dress can be a means of self-expression for everyone; however it is important that learners understand that different contexts require different dress requirements. Everyone is permitted to wear the national dress of their native country.
The following ideas outline our learning context and give our learners a framework for making decisions about the attire they wear to school each day:
Reflective of ISB Values: Attire and any messages communicated on items of clothing should be reflective of ISB Values - respect, responsibility, integrity, and empathy.
Learning-focused: Attire and accessories should promote learning and should not distract from it.
Internationally minded: Attire should be appropriate for our context as a leading international school. When choosing attire, learners should be sensitive of this context and considerate of the diverse perspectives of the community.
Health and safety: Clothing and accessories should promote a safe and healthy environment. Learners should consider what may be appropriate for the variety of activities they engage in throughout the day (ex. athletic gear for PHE or movement clothing for Performing Arts: Drama.)
At ISB we encourage learners to be outdoors both during break and lunch as well as for classes (when appropriate for the learning.) For this reason, everyone should dress for Belgrade’s weather. A waterproof jacket, warm coats, hats, boots, gloves, and/or sunscreen will help to ensure that learners are ready to utilize all learning areas.
Hats and / or sunglasses that are worn for the purpose of sun protection should be removed when indoors.
Everyone is expected to follow dress regulations for school-sponsored activities off campus and any specific requirements will be communicated to all beforehand. Exceptions may also be made in the case of appropriate team uniforms, special school events, and other activities that are extraordinary to the regular school day.
Any member of our community may need to be reminded about appropriate attire for our international context. Below is an outline of how this will be followed up.
Reminders about our dress code:
A verbal reminder will be shared in the moment by the member of staff in the situation. The staff member will follow up by emailing the learner and their respective homeroom teacher. If the learner rectifies the situation no further action is required.
If a second verbal reminder is shared with the homeroom teacher, they will email home to inform parents they have been spoken to on two occasions and failed to rectify the situation. If the learner rectifies the situation no further action is required.
If this happens a third time, a member of the Secondary Leadership team will contact home to discuss this further with the parents. The learner may at this point be required to return home to change.
