PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PSPE)

PSPE in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) at ISB, is concerned with the individual’s well-being through the promotion and development of concepts, knowledge, attitudes and skills that contribute to this well-being. Well-being is intrinsically linked to all aspects of a student’s experience at school and beyond. It encompasses physical, emotional, cognitive, spiritual and social health and development, and contributes to an understanding of self, to developing and maintaining relationships with others, and to participation in an active, healthy lifestyle.

Individual pursuits: The development of basic motor skills and the body’s capacity for movement through locomotor and manipulative skills and/or experiences.

Movement composition: Recognizing that movements can be linked together and refined to create a sequence of aesthetic movements.

Games: Recognizing the challenges presented by games.

Adventure challenges: A variety of tasks requiring the use of physical and critical-thinking skills by individuals and/or groups.

Health-related fitness: Recognizing and appreciating the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

In the Secondary School Physical and Health Education (PHE) courses foster the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that will contribute to a student’s balanced and healthy lifestyle. It focuses on both learning about and learning through physical activity. Through Physical and Health Education, students can learn to appreciate and respect the ideas of others and develop effective collaboration and communication skills. Physical activity and health are of central importance to human identity and global communities. They create meaningful connections among people, nations, cultures and the natural world. Finally, it provides the learner knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions in regard to the selection, acquisition and use of products, services and information related to games, sport and physical activity.

Aims: As stated in the Middle Years Program (MYP) Physical and health education guide, the aims of MYP physical and health education are to encourage and enable students to:

  • use inquiry to explore physical and health education concepts

  • participate effectively in a variety of contexts

  • understand the value of physical activity

  • achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle

  • collaborate and communicate effectively

  • build positive relationships and demonstrate social responsibility

  • reflect on their learning experiences.

The International School of Belgrade has partnered with Functional Movement Systems (FMS) UK. Students in Grades 8, 9 and 10 will have the opportunity to perform the functional movement screen. Once the data for each student has been entered into the software it will create an individual set of corrective movements that help improve the students mobility, stability, balance and posture. (I have attached a document that you could share for FMS.
