Ball de bastons is a popular dance in Catalonia, Aragon, Valencian community and Castilla León. Within the stick dance you can find different dances that have as their main element one or two sticks that are hitting each other.
The tradition dance plays two sides, doing different movements and altering the fight. Each side is distinguished according to its color of clothing.
The traditional dance is based on diferent movementes done, sometimes while changing positions. Most of the dances are played by a big group of people which usually get separed in pairs to kick each partner's sticks in pairs.
The traditional dress is different depending on the zone or the country, but normally is based on the typical footwear ‘’espardenya’’, white pants, a skirt, a colored sash, a shirt and a colored handkerchief.
Each member of the pair has a different color to differentiate the two rows of "bastoners".
During the Erasmus week, we carried out different Catalan cultural activities, such as the "Ball de Bastons" to teach the French students a part of our great cultural dances.
To do the activity, Aniol and Sabrina came, they are two "ball de bastons" dancers from Cardedeu. For 2 hours, they taught us a couple of simple dances to soak us in their activity.
The activity lasted 2 hours, first of all we got into pairs (each with their French partner), and step by step they built and learned a couple of dances that consisted of hitting the sticks, moving from place to place, doing various moves and even change partners. In the end we managed to make it whole with the music playing.
In addition, they brought some pieces of their usual clothing and some people had the opportunity to dress up as authentic bastoners.
