DIVERSITY

WHAT DOES THE TERM "DIVERSITY" MEAN?

The term diversity comes from the latin word diversitas.

The word diversity refers to the difference or distinction between people, animals or things, to the variety, infinity or abundance of different things, to dissimilarity, disparity or multiplicity. The concept of diversity is applicable in many areas and refers to the differences that may exist between people, animals, groups, things, opinions, choices, among many others. Within human beings there is cultural, ethnic, sexual, linguistic, ideological, religious diversity, among others.

The importance of diversity

Cultural diversity allows us to include and accept all the customs and values that the human being has been professing throughout evolution. In 2001 UNESCO proclaimed the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, in which it highlighted the importance of respect, dialogue and commitment between different cultures for the construction of a more equitable, inclusive world with a plurality of voices. Diversity within a society allows the coexistence of people with different opinions, political ideologies, customs, religions and genders.

On the other hand, the importance of diversity in nature is highlighted, which is what allows us to have rich and varied ecosystems. In addition, genetic diversity allowed the development and survival of species over time, which contributed to biodiversity.

·DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MIGRATION & ASYLUM SEEKER·

MIGRATION

Migration is a process of moving, either across an international border or within a country, encompassing any kind of movement of people, regardless of the causes. Some migrants leave their country because they want to work, study or join family, for example. Others feel they must leave because of poverty, political unrest, gang violence, natural disasters or other serious circumstances that exist there.

ASYLUM SEEKER

An asylum seeker is a person who has left their country and is seeking protection from persecution and serious human rights violations in another country, but who hasn’t yet been legally recognized as a refugee and is waiting to receive a decision on their asylum claim. Seeking asylum is a human right. This means everyone should be allowed to enter another country to seek asylum.

·BORDERS IN THE WORLD·

A border is a conventional line that marks the border of a State. Borders can be physically delimited (with walls or wire fences), although this is not always the case. The different countries agree to the extent of their respective limits; when passing said limit (the border), one enters the territory of the neighboring country. The border, therefore, marks a sovereignty. The government of a country has authority within the limits of its borders. What happens beyond, even a few meters away, is out of their concern, as long as it does not affect their national interests.

And what are the borders for?

Borders are used to offer people a "safe country", and for that they close their doors to other countries and people. This impacts the local economy and the residents have advantages. But this causes that people are so close to their gated communities and this creates fear of other countries and it increases inequalities in all the world.

We did an activity that consisted of trying to mark the maximum number of borders possible on the world map (the only part we did not have was Africa), with this we realized the large number of borders that currently exist in the world compared to how it was a few years ago. And we were able to see which countries separate those borders and extract conclusions as to why these should exist.

REASONS FOR THEIR CREATION

There are several reasons. Borders determine how far a government’s power reaches. People within a country’s boundary have to follow its laws and pay its taxes. If they move or travel to another country, they’ll need to know and abide by the laws set there.

IT'S TIME TO SAY OUR OPINIONS!

After working with the maps and watching some videos about these topics, we played a little game.

When we heard an opinion, we had to position ourselves according to whether or not we agreed with that statement. But the things aren't only one thing or other, we learnt that the social issues are more complicated!
