Description: Because of the disabilities' week, in my city, Reus, a workshop with people with Down syndrome was organised for groups of students. Our CAS coordinator did suggest us to take part in this workshop and we accepted.
Planning/previous thoughts: Before the workshop, I was both curious and nervous. I had never worked directly with people with Down syndrome, so I wasn’t sure what to expect at first. However, I saw this as a valuable opportunity to grow personally and to better understand the challenges and talents of people with intellectual disabilities.
Activity's valoration: The workshop was an enriching experience. From the start, there was a welcoming atmosphere and I was surprised by how easy it was to connect with the participants once we started interacting.
One of the most valuable aspects of the activity was the mutual exchange since some of the students did cook with them and, surprisingly, they are expressive, affectionate, and perceptive. The workshop reminded me that inclusion is about connection and respect.
Final reflection: Participating in this workshop helped me break down some of my biases against intellectual disabilities. I realised how important it is to create spaces where everyone feels safe, seen, and included. I also became more aware of how social inclusion can be achieved through small interactions.
EVIDENCE
This picture shows all our class listening to how the activity would take place and how to be respectful with them.
