In younger grades: Student’s independence
Simulations and virtual labs have emerged and grown showing the many benefits. They offer possibilities that would otherwise be out of reach. These digital tools provide inquiry opportunities, prompting students to ask questions and explore concepts in new ways. Virtual labs spark students' interest and give them experiences they may have never had the opportunity to. Simulations and virtual labs have flexibility, can make adjustments and accommodations to suit diverse learning styles, and are readily available on almost any topic imaginable.
However, simulations and virtual labs do have their limitations. The need for technology, including access to devices and a reliable internet connection, is a challenge that could arise. Both teachers and students must have the necessary tech skills to navigate these virtual experiences effectively. Particularly in younger grades, a potential challenge arises in students' independence; they may require more guidance and supervision to navigate the virtual learning environment successfully. Furthermore, accessing high-quality simulations can become costly, which is something that not all educational institutions can readily afford. Striking a balance between the benefits and addressing these challenges ensures that virtual labs contribute positively to education.
