What are Learning Analytics (LA)? Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR) defines LA "as the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimising learning and the environments in which it occurs." 

Key Terms in Learning Analytics

• Big Data: A verity of electronic data collected about students. This might include data detailing demographics, enrollments, learning management systems, surveys, library usage, student performance, and external data sets. 

• Dashboards: Quick, easy to understand collection of multiple data sets which enables students, instructors and institutions to analyze a verity of data for outcomes.

• Tracking: Term used in secondary education which refers to grouping students based on perceived or actual ability.
