• Practical ideas to develop a metacognitive classroom from Year 3 to Year 13! 

Success Criteria: 

• Define metacognition and distinguish it from cognition and self-regulation. 

• Understand how metacognitive strategies improve pupil independence, resilience, and outcomes. 

• Identify the key components of metacognitive processes: planning, monitoring, and evaluating. 

• Recognise opportunities within their subject to explicitly model and scaffold metacognitive thinking. 

• Explore practical approaches to embedding metacognitive talk, prompts, and reflection in lessons. 

• Analyse how metacognition can support all learners, including those with lower prior attainment. 

• Plan to implement at least one metacognitive strategy in their teaching and evaluate its impact on learning.

This session will explore practical oracy strategies to support subject-specific learning – from structured discussions to effective questioning and student-led explanations. Empower your pupils to think, communicate, and succeed – one conversation at a time.

Success Criteria: 

• Understand the role of oracy in supporting subject-specific learning and pupil progress. 

• Identify a range of oracy strategies appropriate for their subject and key stage. 

• Recognise the features of high-quality talk in the classroom (e.g. exploratory talk, accountable talk). 

• Plan opportunities for purposeful talk to enhance thinking, reasoning, and communication in their lessons. 

• Adapt questioning techniques to encourage deeper responses and peer dialogue. 

• Evaluate how oracy can support disciplinary literacy and vocabulary development in their subject. 

• Commit to trialling at least one oracy strategy in their teaching and reflecting on its impact.
