At Cwm Clydach Primary School we work hard to provide our learners with every opportunity and experience that they need to grow and thrive and become the best that they can be.
Our staff strive to develop and expand our learner’s knowledge and understanding inside and outside the classroom to give them the tools that they need to succeed in whatever they choose to do.
We have worked to create an environment within the school that is nurturing and kind, a place where we care about the whole child and do all that we can to meet every individual's needs.
Unfortunately, all this is of no use to our learners if they do not attend.
Children’s attendance is closely monitored by our Head-teacher, Mrs Owens and the Family Engagement Officer, Mrs Griffiths. They work closely with the local authority and RCT’s AWOs.
Our mission going forward is to increase our overall attendance so that our learners can benefit from all that we provide here @ Cwm. However, there will be times when your child is unfit for school or unable to attend school. The law enables schools to authorise absence for the following:
Acceptable medical reasons
An absence for which prior permission has been given
Other absences will be denoted as ‘unauthorised’.
We all get sick from time to time, but how sick is too sick?
Do send your child to school if they:
•Didn’t sleep much last night
•Complain of feeling tired
Don’t send your child to school if they have:
•Sickness or diarrhoea
•Chickenpox
•High Temperature (Over 38°C)
•Any other contagious illness
Call the Doctor if they have:
•Sickness or diarrhoea for over 48 hours
•Tonsillitis
•Ear Infection
•Severe Asthma Symptoms
If in doubt send them in, resting assured that we would not keep them in school if we thought they were not well enough
What does an attendance percentage mean?
At points in the year you child's class teacher will inform you of their attendance percentage. But what does this really mean? Take a look below to find out...
How can I help improve my child's attendance?
Ensuring that your child's attendance percentage does not drop is vitally imporant to their learning. Take a look below at ways in which you can aid your child to have the best attendance possible...
How will good attendance benefit my child?
⮚ Creates good habits for the future of getting up and going where you need to go
⮚ Gives security and normality with a rhythm and pattern to the day and weeks
⮚ Children who regularly attend school find it easier to build and sustain social relationships
⮚ Children who rarely miss school have higher self-esteem, are more confident and comfortable
⮚ Children who are often late or miss school are left feeling like they are missing out and needing to work harder to catch up, they can also experience feelings of isolation from not knowing what other children are doing or talking about
⮚ Being on time everyday helps the children separate from their parents more easily
⮚ The more children miss, the more they fall behind and the more they fall behind the more they want to miss meaning bad attendance is directly linked to underachievement
Our Attendance Policy
To ensure that we have a fair and consistent approach to attendance we have a policy that is updtaed and ratified every year. Here are the main points from the policy. For further information you can see the policy itself below.
⮚All children must arrive at school at 8:50
⮚Anyone who arrives after 9:00 will be marked L (authorised late)
⮚Anyone who arrives after 9:30 will be marked U (unauthorised late)
⮚Medical appointments must be supported by an official appointment card or letter
⮚When a child is absent it is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to inform the school
⮚The school has the authority to decide whether the reason you provide for the absence qualifies for an authorised absence or not
⮚All reasons for absence are recorded on SIMS
⮚When children are continuously late or absent the family will be visited by the Attendance and Wellbeing officers
⮚Holidays will only be authorised up to 10 days a year and only if their attendance is good enough and at the Headteacher’s discretion
⮚Fixed Penalty Notices can be enforced for persistent absence

Signposting to parents who are having difficulties getting their child to attend school to resources and sources of help.
Create incentives and goals for learners to achieve through having good attendance at school.
Work with pupils who have been identifed as poor attenders of school through fun and supportive workshop based activities, focusing on wellbeing.
Use Super Attender initiatives to improve attendance across schools and LA.
Work closely with school family engagement officer (Miss Griffiths) to provide ongoing support and advice.
Undertake "Late on the Gate" strategies to support parents in punctuality at school.
Advise school on process and procedures when learners continue to struggle with attending school.
