This unit standard has been designed for secondary school learners in a manufacturing pathway skills (MaPS) programme.
People credited with this unit standard are able to
: demonstrate knowledge of machines and machine components
; demonstrate knowledge of machining principles
; demonstrate knowledge of cutting tools
; apply good work practices when performing machining operations
; apply good work practices when completing machining operations.
» Measuring and marking out the components.
» Machining the components.
» Safely using and assortment of machining equipment and tools.
» Assembling and securing the components.
o Measuring equipment
o Marking out equipment
o Manually controlled lathe
o Manually controlled milling machine
o Hand tools.
o Understood the hazards present in an engineering workshop.
o Used all equipment safely.
o Worn the correct PPE.
o Selected and used the correct tools and equipment.
o Carried out before use equipment checks and reported any faults.
o Carried out final work operations.
o Understood and interpreted the job specifications and drawings and manufactured the items correctly and to the specifications required in the project drawings.
Mark out the components using the drawings provided.
Manufacture the major components from materials supplied by the tutor.
Use two different materials.
Machining ranges (any 2 of – drill press, lathe, milling machine):
Drilling – a minimum of two different sized holes between 3 mm and 20 mm.
Turning – must include turning diameter and turning length, and any 2 of – taper turning using compound slide, cutting grooves, drilling, parting off.
Milling – any 3 of – slotting, drilling, facing, end milling.
(Machining tolerances using mill or lathe – diameter ±0.2 mm, linear ±0.5 mm)
Assemble the components using mechanical fixing techniques.
Apply good work practices when carrying out these tasks.
o Understand and interpret the job specifications and drawings and manufacture the project correctly and to the specifications required in the project drawings.
o Understand the hazards present in an engineering workshop.
o Use all equipment safely.
o Wear the correct PPE.
o Select and use the correct tools.
Carry out final work operations.
