You'll find all the information here to manufacture your Gear Knob.
This supports the Manufacturing credits for the theory and practical assessments
This Gear Knob project is a simple project which offers an introduction to engineering hand tools, production materials and fasteners, and common manufacturing processes.
This project requires the use of hand-cutting and finishing tools and equipment common to most engineering workshops, and will take about 20 hours to complete.
Machine tools such as a lathe, milling machine and drill are required for some aspects of this project and a reasonable degree of supervision is recommended.
The Gear Knob is a customized item designed to complement the interior layout of a car, and some students may wish to construct this project using an alternative range of engineering materials and finishing processes. See below the alternative materials you could consider.
This project may be used to meet in part the performance criteria of Unit Standards 20917, 2395, 4433, 4435, 4436, 2432 and 2430.
IMPORTANT: You should consult with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency the before fitting this project to any motor vehicle.
Alternative materials should be considered when manufacturing the Gear Knob.
Aluminium is fairly easy to cut and machine; it is relatively inexpensive and can be polished, sandblasted, painted or even anodized to a hard, durable and colorful finish.
Stainless Steel can be difficult to cut or machine; it is generally expensive, but very durable and corrosion resistant, and can be polished to a very high luster.
Plastic is very easy to cut and machine; it is relatively inexpensive and can provide a wide range of colors, but is generally less durable than metals.
To complete this project you will require access to the following machine-tools and hand tools;
• Lathe
• Milling machine or Mill-drill
• Drill Press
• Bench Shear
• Linisher or Sander
• Countersink and Deburing Tools
• Roughing and Finishing Files
• Engineers Vice with Soft Jaws
• Hacksaw and Band-saw or Scroll-saw
• Metric Drill Set
• Metric Thread Taps and Dies
• Allen Keys
• Engineers Square
• Scriber & Steel Rule
• Dividers
• Center and Pin Punches
• Engineers Hammer
• Height Gauge
CREATE - WAIHANGA. THIS NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF TERM 2 !
In Term 1, Week 4, you- will be given material to start the manufacture of your gear knob.
Follow the step by step guide to complete a quality product within the specifications of the drawing.
You will be given instruction on how to use the machinery safely and supervised if you need assistance.
CAREFULLY read the drawings to avoid any mistakes. There are assessment booklets to be completed as you progress!
Please read this as it will assist in you manufacturing the gear knob. It has lots of hints and tips
Keep these drawings as a digital copy. You'll also get a paper copy which you're expected to draw all over
SHARE - TOHATOHA
You will need to provide evidence of your completed project.
