A protest is an event or activity in which people come together with others to openly express their views on a controversial issue. Protests are one of various methods individuals use to engage in activism and organization in order to effect change. In a democratic society, when political and economic structures do not keep pace with social and demographic trends, "taking to the streets" is often a necessary component of a multipronged strategy of community empowerment. In this exhibit, we focus on two such protest movements: the 1979 riots in Worcester's Great Brook Valley housing project; and the 1993 protests in the wake of the killing of Salvadoran immigrant Cristino Hernández by Worcester police officers. These tragic events catapulted Latinos and others members of the Worcester community into mobilization, insisting that their voices be heard by those in positions of authority.
