Worcester has traditionally been, and remains today, one of the primary destinations for refugees in the Commonwealth. Legal refugees and those with Temporary Protected Status make up the core of this group, but some would argue that those among the undocumented who are fleeing war, gang violence, persecution, or natural disasters are also refugees in a wider sense, with lives frequently uprooted as a consequence of U.S. foreign policies. They are supported by community organizations such as Ascentria Care Alliance, CENTRO, and the Legal Aid Society of Worcester, which provide resources to ensure that they are adjusting well to their new surroundings, to ensure their overall safety and well being, and to help with filing paperwork and other legal matters. This exhibit features some of their stories about the experiences in their home countries that compelled them to migrate, their journeys, and their hopes for a new future here in Worcester.
