Over the past few decades, the medical disparities suffered by the Latino community with respect to other ethnic and cultural groups have grown ever wider, creating dangerous gaps in access to health care. In response, members of the Latino community have taken the initiative to address these inequities and promote overall health and well being. This exhibit focuses on three very different examples that highlight the integration of body and soul, medical wherewithal and cultural sensitivity, physical and spiritual health. Hector Reyes House, founded by the Latin American Health Alliance (LAHA) in 2009, provides treatment services, a nurturing living environment, and on-the-job training to recovering addicts. Community stores known as botánicas offer a variety of religiously inspired faith and healing products as well as a community meeting place for practitioners of Santería and related Spiritist traditions. Throughout the Covid pandemic, moreover, leaders in the Latino community have worked tirelessly to equity in vaccine development and availability.
