At The Unified Stage Project, we believe that theater should be an accessible platform for all individuals to express themselves, regardless of their abilities. We aim to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome, celebrated, and supported. The Unified Stage Project addresses the need for inclusive theater opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Many traditional theater productions lack the accommodations necessary for individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities, which limits their ability to participate fully in the arts. This project provides a welcoming, sensory-friendly environment that encourages self-expression and creativity for all participants. I chose this issue because I believe everyone deserves a space to shine on stage, and I want to make theater an accessible platform where individuals with special needs can share their talents and be celebrated.
The project is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where individuals of all abilities can participate in the arts, fostering a sense of belonging and community.
I aim to empower participants by providing them with the tools and opportunities to express themselves creatively, enhancing their confidence and skills.
The project will incorporate sensory-friendly elements such as dimmer lights and reduced sound to ensure that the theater experience is accessible and enjoyable for individuals with sensory sensitivities, allowing everyone to engage in a comfortable atmosphere.
By hosting outreach events and performances, the project seeks to raise awareness about the importance of inclusion in the arts and inspire the broader community to embrace diversity in creative spaces.
We are moving closer to our performance date on February 8. Rehearsals are in full swing, and the finalized schedule includes various accessible activities and sensory-friendly breaks, ensuring that every participant feels comfortable and supported. The enthusiasm and dedication from everyone involved have been inspiring, and it’s amazing to see this inclusive vision come to life.
To raise awareness, I’ve been actively engaging with the community through social media and local outreach efforts. The support and encouragement we’ve received so far have been incredible, and I’m looking forward to seeing even more people come together for this meaningful project.
While fundraising has been slower than anticipated, I’m currently planning several events to generate additional funds. These contributions are vital to ensuring that the project remains accessible and inclusive for everyone. A significant portion of the funds will go toward hosting a post-production celebration for participants, their families, and supporters. This event will serve as a joyous conclusion to our journey, and the fundraising will help cover expenses for food, a welcoming venue, beverages, and small gifts to recognize the contributions of all involved.
I deeply appreciate the community's continued support in making The Unified Stage Project a success. Together, we’re creating something truly special that will leave a lasting impact on everyone who takes part.
Hi, I’m Levi Donoghue—a passionate advocate for inclusive theater and the founder of The Unified Stage Project. This project began as a community service initiative during my junior year and has since grown into my Capstone project, aimed at creating accessible opportunities in theater for individuals with disabilities. I was inspired to start The Unified Stage Project by my own experiences in theater and my commitment to challenging the exclusion that many people with special needs face in traditional productions.
Now, as part of my Capstone and my goal to earn a Global Citizen endorsement, I lead The Unified Stage Project to create sensory-friendly, inclusive performances that allow everyone, regardless of their abilities, to express themselves on stage. Through thoughtful design, accessible productions, and meaningful community engagement, I’m excited to help bring more equity and accessibility to the arts.
The Unified Stage Project, addresses the significant gap in accessible theater opportunities for individuals with special needs, particularly those with cognitive and developmental disabilities. In traditional theater environments, individuals with disabilities often face barriers such as sensory overload, lack of accommodations, and limited representation, which prevent them from fully participating in the arts. This exclusion deprives them of the joy of performance and self-expression. The project was created to provide a space where individuals with disabilities can participate in theater in a fully inclusive and accessible way, offering sensory-friendly performances, adaptive resources, and community engagement. I chose to focus on this issue because I’ve witnessed firsthand the exclusion individuals with special needs face in traditional productions, and I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to express themselves creatively. The Unified Stage Project aims to break down these barriers, creating a supportive and welcoming environment where all participants are valued.
