Project E.N.E.R.G.Y. is a Service Learning project conducted by Charlie Lansdale, Ethan Suhajda, Wyatt Kuchman, and Henry Leek. Our goal is to address the lack of renewable energy at Holliston, but what is our solution? We're going to help to install an electric vehicle charger at the Holliston parks and recreation building. This will provide clean and affordable energy that is accessible to any Holliston residence with electric vehicles as well as by helping the town of Holliston become more eco-friendly.
In a world full of technological and population increase, climate change has been on the rise drastically. Global temperatures and carbon emissions are at an all time high right now and many people won't even acknowledge that climate change is real or help to combat the issue. We want to prove how much can be accomplished by determined individuals who want to go-green. This project is significant to us since we have electric vehicle chargers in our house and want to expand these chargers to the town.
To help facilitate a public charger in Holliston, there are various tasks that need to be completed to better help us understand what goes into these chargers. So far, we've learned optimal places where chargers can be put to use, and met with local experts who have done similar projects and would like our help completing more. One major achievement we had was speaking in front of the Holliston school committee where we shared about our project and worked to convince the committee members that our plan was worth pursuing.
E.V. Charger Fundraiser
Every year HYSA has a Halloween themed soccer tournament for 4th-grade soccer and below. We took this tournament as a opportunity to raise money. We set up a fun and spooky booth next to the field and sold baked goods. At the fundraiser we made around $258 in the 6 hours we were there. With this money we are going to help with some expenses for the electric charger at the Holliston parks and rec building being built.
Educational Awareness: The Energy Challenge
To educate others about climate change and the power of clean electricity we are hosting an energy challenge with the class of 2027 that started on December 4, 2024. Students will track the amount of energy they use daily and input their usage onto a class spreadsheet. The person with the lowest personal usage by the end of the contest will get to choose to pie Wyatt or Charlie in the face or receive a 25 dollar Target gift card.
James Keast is a part of the Holliston Parks and Rec Department and has ample experience in electric vehicle charger installation. He also works for the town of Holliston, providing our group with additional connections and influence. Recently, he was established an electric vehicle charger behind the superet downtown. His assistance, guidance, and special insight, will be a valuable tool to our project.
Dr. Jordan plays a major role in our operation. He serves as an advisor of our operation as well as helping us connect with organizations that help us push our project forward to the next step. We had multiple conferences with Dr. Jordan and we were always able to fall back on him as he helped us troubleshoot nearly every issue we ran into along the way.
