My name is Jonathan Casey, and I am a sophomore at Holliston High School. I am part of the football team and BSA. I am also enrolled in the Global Citizens program. I chose to join this program because I wanted to help stop worldwide problems that best I can, and this program helped me do that. This program helped me see the effects of food insecurity and helped me find and stop it in my community and across the world. This is a problem that needs to be fixed because of how much it negatively impacts people around the world.
People and families across Massachusetts battle with food insecurity and are unable to provide for themselves. Today, 15% of houses in the U.S. have been considered food insecure at one point in time, but ever since the Great Depression, there has been very little help to stop food insecurity on a smaller town-wide scale only country-wide laws that may not help one specific needs. Also, food insecurity can lead to many other (SDOH) causes more harm in the town of Holliston than there needs to be. Many use food pantries such as the one in Holliston, but many individuals are too far away which makes it hard to access. We want to bring the food to people who are less fortunate and don’t have access to a pantry. This need is something that can be solved through passionate individuals who care about their community.
The Holliston Food Pantry is basically a grocery store where people are able to choose from about 500 food items. They also provide and hold personal care items. They are an organization that receives no federal funding or help and is solely based on donations. The pantry is made up of 120 unpaid volunteers. We collected donations and, with their help, we delivered all the food we had gotten around town to the people who needed it at Cole Court and Mission Springs.
Sara Peters is an eighth grade teacher at Robert Adams Middle School who helped us do a food drive at the middle school, and she allowed us to give a presentation to the peer leadership team. She is the person who runs this voluntary club. This is a group of dedicated students at the middle school who care about their school and community, but most importantly, want to make a difference.
Distribute ample amounts of food to the people who need it most.
Inform the people and the community of where the food insecure people are. With help from the Holliston Food Pantry, we are going to give back to the community by bringing food to people who can't physically get it on their own.
We want others to gain passion for this topic like our group and possibly do something similar to our project.
With the help of others, the entirety of Holliston can be food sufficient 4Good.
The week of April 13th, 2025, we took a trip to RAMS and presented to the Peer Leadership Team. This is a group of 8th graders who care about their community and want to make a difference.
A food drive spirit week was held at the middle school and it was great to see how many items were donated. We were happy with how willing people were to give back to their community.
We gave out flyers the weekend of Sunday, May 4th in the Queens. We went to 55 houses, sharing with people our project and our goals. We gave them a list of certain goods that we collected on their doorsteps on Sunday, May 11, 2025.
We counted our goods and we ended up having 600 items. We then transported them from Jake's house to the Holliston Food Pantry, where we met Mrs. Jewett. They were able to take all the goods, and we were very happy to hear that. They work collaboratively with the Cole Court and Mission Springs, making sure that everyone is fed on a local level.
