The logo to represent my project is different shaded blue waves to represent the ocean. My love for the ocean is shown here with my project name across the top. Along the bottom I have "be the change" to me this is important because when people look at my logo they can be inspired and want to change for healthier oceans.
Hi! My name is Braydon Rotz and I am currently a sophomore here at Holliston High School. I am a part of the Global Citizens Program here at the high school and a big part of the club is keeping the world sustainable. For my service learning project I wanted to continue to learn about sustainability and I love being around the ocean and what goes on in it. So I thought, what better way to do it then to combine both of those topics and start Project OurOcean. Outside of school I play hockey and baseball and love spending time outside, being with my family and friends, and I enjoy traveling the world.
The community need I chose to focus on when choosing my project was Environmental Sustainability in Oceans. Environmental Sustainability in Oceans is a topic that focuses on keeping the oceans and things living inside the ocean healthy and safe. I chose to do this topic because I love learning about animals and especially animals in the ocean. It kills me to learn about how much humans are harming ocean life and that is what inspired me to choose this topic for my project.
The goal for my project is to help increase awareness for our waters to keep pollution out of oceans along with keeping animal habitats and ecosystems safe and healthy. I also want to empower and educate the younger generations towards making better decisions when thinking about the oceans and the organisms that live in the ocean. I have finalized a presentation with the Charles River Watershed Association with research regarding my topic. The research and info was given to me by the volunteer outreach associate of the CRWA. On May 16th I went down and presented my research and slides from the CRWA to two classes from Mrs. Buckley. The presentation went very well, there were a lot of great questions from the kids and I was happy that Mrs. Buckley got a chance to speak on this topic from a local standpoint.
My community partnership is the Charles River Watershed Association. The Charles River Watershed Association works to protect and restore the Charles River and its watershed using science. They develop science-based strategies to increase and protect our waters health, and promote environmental equity as we face a changing climate. Right now I am partnering with the volunteer and outreach associate at CRWA. We are creating a slides presentation with research from the topic and I will be presenting it to the 8th graders at the middle school.
The things you can do in our community to help this issue can be as small as just recycling or reducing plastics. If you want to help out in a big way people can volunteer for river clean ups, and donate or advocate for local organizations around you! A great organization to help volunteer at is the Charles River Watershed Association! They have wonderful opportunities for everyone to get involved in every way possible.
