A Service Learning project dedicated to the education of internet safety. I wish to spread awareness to parents of the harms of social media, and that of early exposure. I hope to promote responsible cell phone use through the promotion of the "Wait Until 8th" Pledge - a pledge calling parents to wait until their child has reached eighth grade before giving them their own cellular device. I have chosen this title because I think it is a clever use of words. It has the alliteration aspect which I hope to catch people's attention, and it sounds similar to "screenshot", a vocabulary word relevant to the social media topic.
ScreenSmarts is based on educating people on internet safety, specifically for social media. I intend on spreading the awareness of the potential dangers social media poses for children, the appropriate age it should be introduced, and how to navigate these networks responsibly.
My name is Lizzie Roth and I am a junior here at Holliston High School. Outside of school, I spend most of my time at the Franklin School of Performing Arts, where I take dance classes and voice lessons. There, I am a part of a performing arts group, "Broadway Bound", that travels to Florida every April break to perform at Disney Springs. I am also involved with St. Mary's TGIF Youth Group, where I had the opportunity of attending their mission trip last summer to Biloxi, Mississippi. As an aspiring future educator, I am dedicated to protecting our generation's youth, particularly in regards to their exposure of social media.

Globally, people would benefit from greater awareness of social media. Parents are so willing to give their children an electronic device for entertainment, but they need to be aware of the many risks at hand. As time goes on, the age that kids are introduced to social media gets lower and lower. Independent navigation of social media is not safe for children and it's important parents recognize this as to ensure the safety of their children.
I chose to dedicate my Service Learning project to internet safety because of my own experience with social media. In addition, I wish to pursue teaching one day, and a part of that passion is my wish to better the environment in which our future is brought up in.
Educate parents on the risks of social media
Spreading awareness on the topic is crucial for the project's success. I hope to communicate the harms of young social media usage to persuade parents to wait until later to give their child access to social media.
Encourage electronic-free activities
Social media is a source of entertainment for many, so to replace that, I encourage the practice of electronic-free activities, such as sports, reading, and more!
Promote the Wait Until 8th Pledge
By introducing the "Wait Until 8th" Pledge to my community, I hope to encourage parents to wait until their child reaches eighth grade (at least) before giving them their own cell phone. This can also serve as support for parents who are hesitant to limit electronic access; access to a community like that allows for reassurance, that despite today's "norm", delays in which a child receives their first phone is normal, and in fact, healthy.

The middle school has the right audience for ScreenSmarts' subject. Wednesday, April 16th, my video presentation regarding ScreenSmarts was played on loop as parents attended an informational meeting for incoming sixth graders. Middle school is around the time that most kids get a personal device, therefore I thought holding it there would be appropriate. The age is also suitable to encourage both parents and students to watch.

The Holliston Drug and Alcohol Awareness Coalition is a local organization dedicated to fighting drug or alcohol abuse, and addiction in general. Zoe Moreau, the HDAAC coordinator, suggested and gave the opportunity for me to present my project at Art Saves Lives. There, she reserved space on her table for me to showcase ScreenSmarts. This organization was a great fit because they are trying to combat addiction, and my project touches on a form of that: cell phone addiction.
