The overall goal of my project is to promote the reduction of food waste in our community's homes. I hope to do so by providing recipes that use ingredients that can still be used past their prime. You can find these advertised in local businesses in town or on Instagram: @savethe.scraps. With this project, I hope to make everyone more aware of the effects of food waste and to learn how easy it is to be more active in reducing waste!
My name is Casey Miller and I am currently a junior at Holliston High School. I had planned to join the GCP program since freshman year because it seemed so interesting, but unfortunately I didn't have room in my schedule. However, I still pursued it, and joined the intro class sophomore year. After learning about the issues in our world and the sustainable goals, I moved onto taking the Service Learning class this year. This class gives me the opportunities to use my knowledge and ideas to create solutions for global issues, starting with our community. I can't wait for the many more opportunities GCP will bring me!

The community need I am choosing to face is food waste, because it has so many consequences for other global issues. For instance, food waste affects those living in food insecurity, wastes thousands of dollars for households and businesses, and also expedites the rate of climate change. To find out more, including important statistics, take a look at this slideshow linked to the right, watch my PSA on food waste linked below, or read my research essay from freshman year!
So far, I've created three different food waste reducing recipe pamphlets. The recipes are banana bread with brown bananas, pancakes with buttermilk, and fruit jam with ripened berries. I also created an instagram to more easily place all of the research I have found into one place. Additionally, I made some posters that were put around town like at Coffee Haven or on the Rail Trail that spread awareness on the issues of food waste.

I am partnering with the composting club to hopefully bring composting to HHS! We plan to do so through a company called Black Earth that provides the bins and sustainably disposes of the compost. If you're interested in composting from your own home, check out their website linked below.
PROGRESS: To help out, I made a poster explaining what can and cannot be thrown into the school compost bins! Did you know... onions and orange peels cannot be composted because it could throw off the pH balance? Besides that, most organic food can be composted and turned back into fertile soil.
Make a grocery list before shopping to avoid over purchasing
Compost your scraps (check out Black Earth linked below!)
Save your leftovers and eat them next day or freeze your food
Learn the true meaning behind expiration dates, because just because the date has past doesn't mean the food in inedible
Spread awareness! The more people who know about the effects of food waste, the more households that will make an effort to reduce wasted food, saving more over time!
