Working towards inclusivity in theatre

At The Unified Stage Project, we believe that theater should be an accessible platform for all individuals to express themselves, regardless of their abilities. We aim to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome, celebrated, and supported.
The project is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where individuals of all abilities can participate in the arts, fostering a sense of belonging and community.
I aim to empower participants by providing them with the tools and opportunities to express themselves creatively, enhancing their confidence and skills.
The project will incorporate sensory-friendly elements such as dimmer lights and reduced sound to ensure that the theater experience is accessible and enjoyable for individuals with sensory sensitivities, allowing everyone to engage in a comfortable atmosphere.
By hosting outreach events and performances, the project seeks to raise awareness about the importance of inclusion in the arts and inspire the broader community to embrace diversity in creative spaces.
Hi, I’m Levi Donoghue—a passionate advocate for inclusive theater and the founder of The Unified Stage Project. This project began as a community service initiative during my junior year and has since grown into my Capstone project, aimed at creating accessible opportunities in theater for individuals with disabilities. I was inspired to start The Unified Stage Project by my own experiences in theater and my commitment to challenging the exclusion that many people with special needs face in traditional productions.
Now, as part of my Capstone and my goal to earn a Global Citizen endorsement, I lead The Unified Stage Project to create sensory-friendly, inclusive performances that allow everyone, regardless of their abilities, to express themselves on stage. Through thoughtful design, accessible productions, and meaningful community engagement, I’m excited to help bring more equity and accessibility to the arts.
Right after the performance, high fiving everyone
I’m thrilled to share that our recent performance was a huge success! The cast’s hard work and dedication truly shined on stage, and the positive feedback from families, friends, and staff has been incredible. Seeing the joy and pride on everyone’s faces reminded me why this project matters so much.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to start planning an adapted version of the show for the middle school, giving even more students the chance to experience the magic of theater. Recruitment for new actors and volunteers is already underway, and I’m brainstorming ideas for next year’s production — aiming to make it even more inclusive, creative, and fun for everyone involved.
Stay tuned for more updates, and if you know anyone interested in joining the Unified Stage community, I’d love to welcome them!
