"Thanks to Principal Chad Okamoto of Pu'u Kukui Elementary School for all of his hard work in running the school and creating a wonderful culture. State Representative Tyson K. Miyake and myself did a site visit to understand issues he is facing, which is by far the over crowding of the school. He is turning offices and other spaces into classrooms. We are working on acquiring the property next to the school to expand the property footprint or add a structure on existing land. Part of the solution will also be embarking on redistricting the central maui elementary schools to even out school populations. Lots of work ahead but these Principals truly get creative to make learning a top priority." Facebook Sen. Troy Hashimoto, July 22, 2024

The increase in student enrollment rate is projected to slow down after 2025-26.
DOE is expected to receive a 3-acre land contribution by the developer, A&B properties for expansion of the school.

Mayor Richard Bissen said in September 2023 that it would probably be up to two years before Lahaina residents could begin rebuilding their homes. Add a few years for construction, and five years seemed reasonable.
