Transition Work
This work is to be completed before starting your course. The work will be set on Taster Day and due in during the first full week of College. This work will be assessed alongside subject assessments and Attitude to Learning.
Task Overview
As part of the A-Level Product Design course, you will have to demonstrate a range of designing, developing and modelling skills. You will develop iterative ideation techniques, demonstrate an awareness of materials and manufacturing methods along with the wider issues associated with designing and developing products in the modern world.
Task
Produce a range of design concepts for one of the following contexts:
Context 1
In inner cities large apartment blocks are built with limited outside space. Design a suitable method of encouraging families to grow their own vegetables by using a planter that can be fitted to a windowsill or a balcony.
Context 2
Encouraging children to tidy their own bedrooms can be difficult. Design storage for a child’s bedroom to hold a range of different objects which is fun and easy to use for a child aged 3 – 5.
1. Show your creativity by producing a range of annotated ideas for your chosen context on one A3 or two A4 sheets. Include 2D and 3D sketching and show constructional details. (45 mins)
2. On one A3 or two A4 sheets develop your best idea showing all elements of the product. Include detailed annotation discussing materials, manufacturing and joining methods. Use a simple card model to help you communicate your design. (1 hour 45 mins)
Expected Work: 2 x A3 or 4 x A4 sheets
Preparation for September
Find below the guidance on what will be required from September for your subjects. Subject textbooks are listed in priority order. Please see guidance before purchasing any textbooks.
