Your algebraic skills need to be strong before you start studying A-Level Mathematics. The course will start with a strong focus on algebraic manipulation, indices, surds and equations. The transition work will hopefully help you recap and strengthen these skills prior to starting in September.

Transition Work
This work is to be completed before starting your course. The work will be set on Taster Day and due in during the first full week of College. This work will be assessed alongside subject assessments and Attitude to Learning.

You will work through a transition booklet that will test you on the key algebra, number and geometry skills that are required as a prerequisite to study mathematics and further mathematics at A Level.

Complete all questions from the Double Maths transition booklet. You will be provided with worked examples to help you along with tutorial videos. When you have finished, mark your work using the answers provided and then make corrections. It is vital that you show your method and workings for each question and don’t go straight to the answer.

You must mark your own work from the answers provided.
When you have finished you must fill in the checklist near the front of the booklet.

Students will be provided with A4 lined exercise books that they should bring to every lesson. Students will need to bring basic maths equipment such as pen, pencil, ruler and occasionally compasses.
We highly recommend the NumWorks Graphing calculator for the A Level maths course, although any graphical calculator will be suitable. If you are unable to purchase a graphical calculator then please contact the maths department to discuss alternatives.
