Students will need to be able to read a digital clock and understand it (e.g., 1:23 is 23 minutes past 1 o'clock) and read an analog clock to the nearest 5 minutes. When looking at temperature students will be required to read a thermometer in Celsius and identify bench marks (e.g., water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius). When looking at the calendar students will have to know the months of the year, days of the week and elapsed time (e.g., what is the date in 12 day or what is the date 4 weeks from tomorrow).
We have begun to look at and discuss the difference between Non-Fiction and Fictional books. This week we have focused on finding Non-Fiction text features in a number of different books relating to our science discussions. Can you find and sort different books at your house?
We are continuing to work on our own pieces of work during our Writer's Workshop time. Students are creating different forms of text to take through the writing process. Each month, the goal is to have students take at least one piece of writing to the publishing stage where they can share with their peers and become part of the Author's Spotlight in our classroom.
Ask your child what form of text they are currently writing in class.
We are continuing to explore Ontario and the regions. We will be focusing on land use in Ontario and the different regions. We will also be exploring mapping, the features of a map and practice creating and reading various maps. Stay tuned for more information!
The colour wheel is an element of art that has been touched on in each grade. This week we are focusing on both naming the primary and secondary colours in the colour wheel as well as deciding which colours are "cool" and which colours are "warm". We will be using this knowledge to create warm and cool coloured art pieces in the coming month.
Over the past few months we have had a focus on the 6 forces. In December, we have focused on Natural Forces. At this point, students are expected to be able to assess the effects of the action of forces in nature (natural phenomena) on the natural and built environment, and identify ways in which human activities can reduce or enhance this impact. We have also spoken about the impact of safety devices that minimize the effects of forces in various human activities. Has your child been answering their homework questions about explaining these topics to you? Please sit down and have them explain their learning to you!
Try asking these questions: What are the benefits of using seatbelts in cars, knee and elbow pads and wrist guards for roller blading, helmets for cycling and hockey, sport shoes designed for high impact sports like aerobics and basketball? What features does a car have to protect it's passengers during an abrupt change in direction?
