We are working on area in addition to making connections to perimeter from last week. We have made connections to perimeter being like the fence in a garden and the area being the area covered by a carpet.
Recently, I have been asking students to show their thinking as we have been working on this concept since the beginning of the year. By students showing their work, even if their final answer is incorrect, they are able to show their process and gain part marks.
(e.g., ) Perimeter = adding the length of all the sides = 8m + 8m + 8m = 24m
We will be connecting Area to arrays and multiplication and have sent home a multiplication chart for students to start memorizing their facts. We will be doing some explicit teaching of multiplication in the coming weeks, however, learning the facts will help with recall and understanding. Students will be required to know their facts up to 7X7 and use different strategies taught in class to do some problem solving questions. At home, start practicing the facts to help.
Please see below for some in class activities we have been doing.
Students have been working on creating their own Non Fiction Dinosaur trading card on the Google Drive. The idea being that students understand using different text features for different purposes in their work.
We have also been connecting our Non Fiction text learning to some research on different industries in Ontario. This connects to our Studies Unit of Living and Working in Ontario. Student have been chosen a topic and have researched the different effects that their topic would have on the environment and the community around them. Topics include but are not limited to: farming and agriculture, fishing, mining, logging, fossil fuels, natural resources. We will be presenting these topics and their effects to the class to share what we have learned.
We are continuing to work on our own pieces of work during our Writer's Workshop time. Students are creating different forms of text to take through the writing process. Each month, the goal is to have students take at least one piece of writing to the publishing stage where they can share with their peers and become part of the Author's Spotlight in our classroom.
Ask your child what form of text they are currently writing in class.
Please see Language for our connection to Non Fiction texts and what we are currently working on.
Continuing on our journey through understanding warm and cool colours, we are working towards connecting colours to different emotions. Different students can relate to different colours in different ways based on their experiences.
We are working on identifying our feelings and their corresponding emotions as well as understanding their connection to the warm or cool colour of the colour wheel.
We have started our unit Structures! Throughout the next several weeks, we will be looking at strong stable structures and figure out what makes them strong. Students will get to create structures and apply a force to it. We will be exploring different types of bridges and how they are made in order to be strong.
Here are some different videos to check out!
We are lucky enough to have Health with Mrs Grant on Thursdays. Have you seen the new 2019 Canadian Food Guide?
We are lucky enough to have Drama/Dance with Ms Green on Mondays. Students are excited to begin their dance unit and are busy answering questions about why dance is important, why dance is good for us, why we dance, and many more. Dance, like Art or Drama, has many different elements as well as styles. It's important for us to understand the elements of dance such as body, time, energy, space, and relationships to make connections to different styles, as well as understanding movement in our bodies.
We are lucky enough to have Physical Education in our beautiful gymnasium with Mrs T and Mr Laird. We are joined by another Grade 3 class and have Phys Ed on Wednesdays and Fridays.
