Triceratops means "Three Horned Face" because it has three giant horns. It's head was an astounding 7 feet long! It weighed 6-12 tons. Triceratops lived about 68 - 66 million years ago, in the Late Cretaceous. It was 8-9 meters long(26-30). It was a herbivore, which means it ate plants. It was one of the largest ceratopsians to exist, and the most well known ceratopsian. It had a large frill and large horns. It could run relatively fast for a herbivore, around 19-20 mph.
Triceratopses horns and frills may look like dangerous weapons, but they were actually used for display and mating. (It's horns were still deadly) Triceratops had a diet for fruits, cycads, flowering plants, and palms. Triceratops was also discovered in 1887, thought to be an extinct species of bison. Triceratops did not live in large herds, but rather, smaller family groups. The Triceratops was one of the last dinosaurs.
The largest herd or family group of Triceratops ever found only had a couple baby Triceratopses, around 5 younglings. Another genus of larged horned dinosaur, called Torosaurus, is now known to be actually Triceratops in its mature form, but its still an ongoing debate. Triceratops lived in a mix of grasslands and forests in western North America.
