A meteor that looks cool
Meteors have caused extinctions and are very powerful. Meteors regularly come close to Earth but are not big enough to get through our atmosphere. Big meteor can go through our atmosphere and smash into Earth. One of those meteors was the Chicxulub impactor one that killed the dinosaurs. There is much confusion about the difference meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites. A meteoroid is a small, rocky or metal thing in space. When it enters the Earth's atmosphere it becomes a meteor. It disintegrates most of the time. When this happens, it is often called a "shooting star." If a meteor survives through the atmosphere and lands on Earth, it's called a meteorite. A meteor shower happens when many meteors with close proximity. They can move at speeds of 25,000 to 160,000 miles per hour! Lucky most meteors are small. One large meteor that hit Earth recently was the Chelyabinsk meteor that hit Russia in 2013.
To survive a large Meteor on the scale of the Chicxulub impactor is almost impossible. The most powerful nuclear bomb, the Tsar Bomba. It would take 2 million of them to equal its power! In the future we may be able to deflect meteors. For now, we probably won't get hit.
