Are you working by yourself or in a team?
I will be working by myself
What materials will you need for your project?
I will need the X-Carve and the software
What is your plan to create in this project?
I will make multiple designs and eventually pick the one I like the most
What unique qualities will your project have?
My project will have designs that are commonly used, but I will add my own flare and add things to it to make it look better.
I started my project and planned everything out.
I spent the day learning how to use the EASEL software and planned out how I was going to create my design.
I began formulating my design and adding things to it. I started adding instruments and items related to Metallica.
I started setting up the dimensions and getting my wood ready for cutting. I watched videos on Youtube to figure out what to do.
I started clamping down my wood. I made a mistake 3 times in a row so it was a struggle to get going.
I finished clamping my design and getting it ready for cutting.
I collected my freshly cut wood and started my reflection. My design came out perfectly.
Using Easel software, I created a Metallica design because they're my favorite band. I'm going to a concert this Friday, so I thought this would be perfect. I used a guy that resembles someone who listens to Metallica, a drum set, and a guitar. All of this showed the mood I wanted perfectly.
During this process, I learned how to use different symbols and designs to make a full, complete design. Originally, I only had the drums. This didn't really feel like Metallica. I then found the tour name, the name and a font that would work to look like the authentic Metallica design. In the end, I had a full design that filled up the board, but didn't feel messy.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Knowledge Constructor because I originally had zero clue what I was doing. In the start, I was just adding little designs that I thought look cool. With the help of my peers I successfully made a design fit for cutting on the X-Carve.
A challenge I overcame on this project was clamping down my wood. I was able to do it by asking my peers for help. At first, I kept putting the clamps down wrong. This made it so my wood kept moving around. If it did this during cutting, my whole design would be ruined. However, my peers helped me and it made my process a lot easier.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change how many designs were on my carve. If I had more, there would be a risk that my cut would come out very messy. However, I would take the risk so that my board looked more full and complete. The reason why I would change it is because some areas on my board felt empty and incomplete. However, I'm still happy with what I ended with.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the Engineering Design CTE program at Hastings High School. This is because I designed something and put my ideas onto a real-life product. I used a software, and ended up with a finished design that I can use. My project connects to careers in multiple wood cutting jobs. Whether it's actually using an X-Carve, or making items that can be used day to day, it will be easily used in multiple careers.
