REFLECTION
Using paper, markers, glue, tape, a pencil, an iPad, and a computer, I created a paper Christmas tree jar that opens and closes. I created this to store little kind reminder notes in there for my mom to read. I wanted to make her happy by creating something creative. I also made it a tree because it is soon to me Christmas time and it's a fun and reasonable gift to make. I enjoyed making this and I think it turned out pretty great.
During this process, I learned how to make the tree part able to close on the stump. I didn't know how to do it at first but I looked up some tutorials on how to make it close together without anything falling out of it. I inserted an oval shaped paper the size of the stump but a little smaller so it could fit in the stump. I then glued that paper to the tree so it could slip in the stump and stay. I would say it turned out pretty good for using paper.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative designer because I used resources and materials like paper and markers and stuff like that to create a paper tree that opens and closes. My project also ties to Knowledge Constructor because I watch tutorials on how to make certain things. For instance I watched videos on how to make it so I could make the tree open and close. I also looked up how to shape the tree. Everything turned out great and I am glad I did this project.
A challenge I overcame on this project was was trying to shape the tree. I wasn't able to shape it for some reason. I even looked up tutorials on how to do it but I couldn't quite figure out what they were doing. Eventually, I was able to do it by looking closely and spending time to follow what they did step by step. It was a bit hard but I got it down. Even though it was a bit hard, it was also interesting because it gave me a challenge.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change adding little prickles to the tree like the real trees have. The reason why I would do this is because it would make the tree look better and fancier. I love the way I made it now but if I could have added those prickle branches it would be a fun experience and I would love the outcome even more than I do now. It's a small little change but I think it could make a big impact on the looks.
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the Construction Trades CTE program at Hastings High School. This is because I used tools the proper way and safely. I also used stuff like scissors and glue to put my project together. My project also ties to Engineering Design. This is because I defined my problems like wanting to have my tree open and close properly, and I gathered information like watching tutorial videos to make the tree functional.
My project connects to careers in craft production, carpentry, and instructional design because the skills I used relate directly into these fields. It relates to craft production careers, such as a studio artist or artisan, where the ability to plan, design, and construct unique objects using simple, materials like paper, glue, and markers is necessary. This method of cutting and assembling the paper object using basic tools is essential to professions like carpentry or set construction, which require precision and a practical understanding of the materials to create functional structures like I did. By using tutorial videos to learn and create projects, this is another example on what these professionals also do.
