Using duck tap, cardboard, tin foil, hot glue, and yarn, I created a puppet of a dog. The plan at first was to create only one puppet and we didn't know what it would be but we decided to each create a puppet and mine ended up being a dog. I did this because a member of my team suggested it ind my team agreed on it. At first I was skeptical if it would even be possible to make with cardboard. We stuck with is and I realized that it was fun and had interesting problems that needed to be solved such as how to create a structure that you can fit your hand in and how to attach the body.
During this process, I learned how to create a hollow form or a base using cardboard. This would be use full in art to make the base of a clay sculpture. I also.learned how to better use the materials I have on hand. It was fun trying to figure out how to decorate the outside of the puppet with just the materials on hand. I think I did a decent job of doing it with the 5 materials I had to work with.
The 7 standards of the class are Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. My project ties to Innovative Designer because I used the design thinking possess and problem solved to do this project. I also tested theories to help solve problems.
A challenge I overcame on this project was that the puppet had to be completely hollow, so that my arm would fit in and I would be able to use the puppet I was able to do it by brainstorming with my team coming up with the idea to use strips of cardboard that create the basic shape then lining it with tin foil. I also repeatedly checked to make sure my hand fit into the head how I wanted it to.
Given a chance to do this again, I would change the way I did the eyes and add more strips of cardboard or do something else to strengthen the structure. The reason why I would change these things is because I am not thrilled on how the eyes look and adding another structural component would help the til foil not rip as much and help it better withstand the things that happened to it in the classroom (it got stepped on and otherwise bracken a couple times).
Hastings High School Career and Technical Education Program offers Agriculture, Business Management, Computer Programming, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Digital Multimedia, Engineering Design, Finance, Insurance, Marketing. My project connects to the construction CTE program at Hastings High School because we constructed the puppets and gave then structure. My project connects to careers in construction because in our project we used skills in construction like how to build a base structure to build the bases for our puppets.
