All students will study either Year 10 General Mathematics or Year 10 Mathematical Methods. This prepares students for all of the available Year 11 and Year 12 mathematics subjects offered at GWSC.
There are three pathways offered for students to select.
Brief subject pathway information is discussed below. Please click on the links for more detailed information.
Year 10 General Mathematics is a subject option aimed at students who are finding Year 9 Mathematics difficult and who may only wish to study VCE General Mathematics in Year 11 and 12 or may not wish to continue with mathematics in the VCE. Course counselling is required to select this subject because it restricts students from taking the VCE Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics subjects.
Year 10 Mathematical Methods is a subject option aimed at students who are finding the difficulty of Year 9 Mathematics comfortable. This subject is aimed at preparing students for VCE Mathematical Methods and VCE Specialist Mathematics. Students are recommended to select this subject if they are unsure about which VCE Mathematics subject(s) they wish to study at the end of Year 10, as they can move into General Mathematics if they find this subject too challenging.
Units 1 & 2 Mathematical Methods is a subject option aimed at high-achieving mathematics students who have a passion for mathematics and intend to study Specialist Mathematics in their VCE. A merit-based selection process is performed once students express interest in this subject through their Year 9 subject selection form. Students study this subject alongside Year 10 Mathematical Methods if they are selected.
