Units 1&2 Specialist Mathematics is a subject for students who wish to undertake an in-depth study of mathematics, with an emphasis on concepts, skills and processes related to mathematical structure, modelling, problem solving, proof and reasoning. This subject has a focus on interest in the discipline of mathematics in its own right and investigation of theoretical concepts, as well as the development of a sound background for further studies in mathematics and mathematics-related fields.
This subject introduces many new mathematical concepts to students, while also further developing some of the concepts studied in Units 1&2 Mathematical Methods. The studied concepts include advanced algebra, sequences and series, trigonometry, complex numbers, graphing techniques, matrices and transformations, vectors, kinematics, statistics, discrete mathematics, logic, proof and algorithms.
This subject prepares students to study Units 3&4 Specialist Mathematics.
Students are required to have studied Year 10 Mathematical Methods and must undertake Units 1&2 Mathematical Methods with Units 1&2 Specialist Mathematics or have undertaken Units 1&2 Mathematical Methods in Year 10.
This subject is recommended for students who are achieving at least Excellent grades in Year 10 Mathematical Methods.
