It’s been a while since the GPHS kids have had a dose of childhood nostalgia, due to all the chaos happening towards the end of the school year. Most kids are focused on getting A’s on their finals or picking out the best electives for next year, and some are even getting ready to leave high school and start their new life. There hasn’t been a lot of time for thinking about events that happened the day before, so there definitely might not be time for thinking about memories from your childhood. Well, to solve this problem, a new dose of pure nostalgia is right in front of your nose and ready to be devoured! So, sit back, relax, and get ready to relive the good old days.
“Hola, Soy Dora! Can you help me find the river?” Ah, yes… Everyone’s favorite explorer, Dora. It’s honestly surprising that she hasn’t made it onto an article yet, considering how practically everyone watched this show at least once in their life. Dora the Explorer came out in the year 2000, and ran for almost 20 years before ending abruptly in 2019. The show was about a little Latina girl named Dora, who goes on adventures with her monkey friend, Boots, and her backpack. She stops a fox named Swiper from stealing things, just by telling him, “Swiper NO swiping!” This somehow works, even when the fox is just an inch away from grabbing the priceless item, which doesn’t make sense at all. A review on Common Sense Media, an organization that supports learning through media, says, “I Loved this show as a kid and still do today although it can be annoying at times, but the nostalgia overshadows it.” Most people who have watched Dora in their lifetime would probably agree with this rating, having enjoyed the show as a kid and only enjoying it now because it gives the person a sense of pure nostalgia.
'Next on the list is Tom and Jerry, the most classic game of cat and mouse since 1941. The show consists of a cat and mouse running around and getting into crazy shenanigans. Jerry, the mouse, typically torments the house cat, Tom, and runs around messing up everything in the house. Sometimes, he floods the place, messes up Tom’s chance at a sad love life, or just plain old torments Tom when he tries to follow his owners instructions. However, sometimes, Tom and Jerry team up, like in one of the original Tom and Jerry movies where the cat and mouse have to save a little girl from the clutches of her greedy aunt. People have been fans of this dynamic duo for so long, and a review on Common Sense Media says, “As a 13-year-old, I grew up with not only this, but old Disney and Warner Bros shows. I instantly fell in love with the show when I got my first DVD of the show.” There it is, a show full of nostalgia and fun-filled pranks, surely a favorite of most kids all around the world.
Third on the list is The Backyardigans, a show that recently made a comeback on TikTok with its sounds, "Superspy" and "A Baby Penguin" The show is about five colorful animal pals named, Pablo, Tyrone, Uniqua, Tasha, and Austin. The kids are all very creative, with huge imaginations that they use when playing pretend in their backyards. The kids can be spies, explorers, pirates, or anything that they imagine. The show started in 2004, ending in 2013 to the despair of some long-time fans. The show used 3D animation, which was cutting-edge technology at the time, using advanced technology to do 3D choreography for the many songs in each episode. A critic on Rotten Tomatoes writes, “It's not always easy to find a show you like as much as your youngsters do, but The Backyardigans definitely has the potential to fit that bill.” The show is a lot of fun, with the creative sets that the kids come up with and the entertaining songs. It’s one of the few kids shows that adults can tolerate or even enjoy.
“Call me, beep me, if you wanna reach me!” That’s right, next on the list is Kim Possible, a classic Disney Channel show about a teenage crime fighter with a clumsy best friend… Which, honestly, just sounds like every Disney Channel show ever. In the show, Kim fights mad scientist Dr. Drakken and his assistant Shego, with her best friend Ron helping her along the way. The show is action-packed and fun, a little bit darker than the others but still light-hearted and good fun most of the time. A review on IMDb says, “It appeals to kids, it appeals to teens, it appeals to adults. This show is hysterically funny, with jokes many different age groups will laugh at individually as well as together, and exciting without being too violent for the young ones.” This is a family favorite all around. Even though it can be predictable in the first season, it really starts to kick off when you get later into the show. Turning the TV on and watching Kim Possible is honestly just like diving head-first into a pool of nostalgia.
,“Water, Earth, Fire, Air... Long ago the four nations lived in harmony…” Anyone recognize the intro to this show? That’s right, it’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. This show is a personal favorite, due to its action-packed scenes and detailed plot and storyline. The show aired in 2005, ending two years later in 2008. The entire story revolves around an air bender named Aang, who is secretly the avatar and was frozen in ice for 100 years. The avatar can control all four elements and, when they die, they are reincarnated. Aang is unfrozen and finds himself in the middle of a war, having to fight alongside some friends from the water tribe, and other allies he meets along the way, to defeat the evil Fire Lord named Fire Lord Ozai. The show has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a review from a critic says, “Franchise writers of all stripes could stand to learn something from how neatly Avatar lines up the audience's expectations, then satisfies them in a way that still manages to feel unexpected.” And I couldn’t possibly agree more. ATLA is a beautiful show that deserves to get recognized more.
There you have it! Another dose of childhood nostalgia to end the school year! These shows were mainly focused from the early 2000s to target our seniors who are heading off. I hope that this article could deliver them a sense of nostalgia that fills them with a happy feeling as they go off to start their new life. And with that, the 2022-2023 school year childhood nostalgia column comes to a close. I hope this was a good one to go out on.
