Progress Report

In elementary music classes students are to explore music of diverse cultures and communities. In their exploration of culture, students are also expected to examine how technology is used and has affected music of the past and present. The development of technology has exponentially changed how music teachers facilitate the achievement of this outcome within their classrooms.

In my progress report I have highlighted how music teachers used to, currently, or could explore music of diverse cultures and communities. I examined how technology has impacted the way teachers learn information about diverse cultures, the types of resources teachers use to expose students to diverse cultures, and the types of activities used to teach about diverse cultures. Through this, technology’s impact on music was also be explored.

By highlighting the impact technology has had on how music teachers explore culture with their students I hope to find new cultural resources; emphasize how learning about diverse cultures through music could cross-over into other curriculum areas; and identify new ways communication technology could be used within the music classroom.

Overall, this report highlights the positive impact technology has had on teaching about music from around the world and offers recommendations for how music educators can stay current with the continuing advancements in technology.
